North American Clouded Leopard Population

Didn't the Minnesota Zoo used to have a successful breeding program for this species? Do they no longer exhibit the species?

Many include existing trees but it's nothing great.

How they managed to get SSP clouded leopards from Miami still baffles me.

Wow, existing trees. I guess you could call that a natural exhibit. As in what nature provided and nothing else.....

I suspected the non-AZA facilities had to be participating. Whether it's a good idea for the animal or not, all these animals that can not breed because of the behavioral issue @Coelacanth18 explained might as well be spread around as ambassador animals. A non-AZA breeding candidate may emerge from one of these dives, er facilities, and that's probably the real reason for the policy. They really need more cats.

They do not currently have any Clouded Leopards. I don't know the last time they did but it has to have been at least 8 years ago.

The Bronx Zoo should have 1.0 bts, though I don't know any information about this individual.

Yes! Just the other day, I saw a picture of one on some Bronx ad or member message and did a double take. They have snow leopards, and I was looking for the white chest, but this (head only) shot seemed to be a clouded. I've never seen it on exhibit, but maybe it was trained as a tame ambassador animal somewhere and is used for that purpose. All the animals we can find little about seem to end up being there.

Heritage Park getting clouded leopards from Zoo Miami doesn't necessarily mean they are participating in a breeding program, although they might be; the animals could have been surplus to the breeding population. It is plausible that the zoo population is at or near holding capacity; given that they wouldn't want to curtail breeding or euthanize animals to make space, the only other short-term option is to send surplus animals to whatever facilities make space for them.

Whether it's a good idea for the animal or not, all these animals that can not breed because of the behavioral issue @Coelacanth18 explained might as well be spread around as ambassador animals.

Training animals for ambassador/educational purposes is also something that is normally done at an early age. Additionally, I do not understand why you think animals with behavioral issues should be used as ambassadors if it's not a good idea for the animal.

A non-AZA breeding candidate may emerge from one of these dives, er facilities, and that's probably the real reason for the policy.

What policy are you referring to?

Cat Haven does indeed have 1.1 clouded leopard (they just haven't added them to their new website yet). The name of one of them is Mushu, since they just posted its birthday on their Facebook page. I don't know if it's the male or female. I am virtually certain both are from Tanganyika.

When I mentioned that it might be a good idea to send these non-breeders to serve as ambassador animals, I didn't mean in education programs, which would indeed require special training from a young age. I just meant they could be ambassadors of their species in educating the public. Only in my post about the Bronx was I referring to an actual Ambassador Program in an education department.

For lack of a better term to summarize your explanation of clouded leopards being unsuccessful in breeding if certain newly-discovered circumstances aren't put in place, I used "behavioral problems," as in breeding-behavior-specific problems. I wouldn't recommend anything that isn't good for the animal, unless, possibly, the only option is euthanasia.

By policy, I was referring to the Asian elephant SSP working with non-members to help conserve the species. Animals like Hank from Riddles' Animal Sanctuary who was loaned to the Columbus Zoo could serve critical breeding functions in a population in which number and genetic diversity of mature males is a challenge. The clouded leopard situation would seem to be an even bigger challenge.

Sorry, all. My brain must have been full of rocks when I wrote my previous post.

Wait a second - R Lazy J Ranch has fishing cats! Are you sure? Someone else told me yesterday they have two cheetahs as well. I definitely need to check into this. Oddly, none of this is shown on their website or Facebook.

I'm not sure if they have cheetahs, but would very much like to know. Roer's Safari has two cheetahs, though, with probably the nicest exhibit in the place, so I don't think they'd send them off. They came from Richmond (which employees didn't know); they were fairly young when they arrived and there was a naming contest, which I learned about while talking to a visitor (their names are Fuli and Dash; in the studbook they are Dakari and Zuberi). The employees usually don't know animals are going to be heading to AZ or what's going on. There are no signs in the zoo indicating that species have left and they don't even bother putting black tape or something over their names on the big display map, I had to ask about all of the missing species that were on the website and map, which is how I learned the cloudeds and fishing cats went to R Lazy J.

Edit: R Lazy J is only 2 or 3 years old. According to the 2018 studbook, released Dec 2019, they don't have cheetahs, but that's as of a year and a half ago.

Confirmed no cheetahs in AZ, and no plans to add them currently.

Denver has four? I only ever see the same one (Taji), and that's rare even. Of course they still list Amur leopards on their site, and he's been off exhibit for months.

Update:

There are currently 42.59 clouded leopads in captivity around North America ( probably more) as of April 2020.
