Hamerton Zoo Park Hamerton news 2020

The park's website has released news about births that have taken place at Hamerton since the start of 2020:

- Blue spiny lizards have been hatched to the newly-arrived group, with the young now in an off-show rearing area.
- Eggs from both the electric blue geckos and Ruppell's griffon vultures are being incubated.
- A new baby red-bellied tamarin has been born, bringing the number of individuals in the park to fifteen. Two pairs will be moving to the Czech Republic by the end of the month.
- A new tayra has also been born. A pair of tayra will soon be moving from Hamerton to Denmark.
- In terms of the marsupials, there are now joeys of several parma wallabies as well as common brushtail possums and rufous bettongs; there is also a new joey of the Tasmanian golden possum (the young born last year to these animals was male).

According to Zootierliste, Zoo de Servion only keeps the Syrian brown bear. It seems when they arrive at Hamerton they will be the only ones of their subspecies in the UK. Very exciting news!

I had a feeling whatever's moving into the new carnivore enclosure was going to probably be a bear species, exciting it is!

Will be really nice to see another UK Zoo go into Syrian brown bears after the death of Dartmoor's specimen a few years ago....

Hamerton has released a couple of news articles about a number of animal moves that have recently taken place:

- The first article says that a pair of Javan binturong born at Hamerton have recently moved to Duisburg Zoo

The second article includes a much larger number of animals transfers, including:
- The pair of tayra were moved to KrokodileZoo (Denmark)
- A female greater grison moved to Tiergartern Schonebeck (Germany) to join males already there
- Rufous bettongs moved to Eifel Zoo (Germany)
- Two young female camels moved to another site in the UK

- Parma wallabies are soon due to move to zoos in both Japan and the UK
- A possum (species/type unspecified) and rufous bettong to other UK zoos

- A young male caracal is due to arrive soon from the Czech Republic
- Two female two-toed sloths and a male pudu arrived at the end of January from Germany

Some excellent news from Hamerton's website - two joeys have been born to the group of squirrel gliders imported from Darling Downs Zoo last year. They were born a few weeks ago and can now be seen out and about with their parents.

Per Facebook, the fish have arrived for the aquariums:

"Our fish have arrived!

14 species of fish have arrived into our coffee shop tanks all from Australia. Rainbowfish, Barramundi and Australian Lungfish are just a few of our new arrivals!

They arrived on Friday and are all settling in well!

- Delicate blue-eye
- North-west glassfish
- Blyth River rainbowfish
- Chequered rainbowfish
- Ornate rainbowfish
- Primitive archerfish
- Hyrtl's tandan
- Obbe's catfish
- Barramundi

Most of the fish are visible from a distance but are screened to keep disturbance to a minimum as they are currently quite shy.

I've not been to Hamerton for a couple of years, but with lungfish and barramundi I'm guessing there must be a fairly sizable aquarium in the long term plan if there isn't one already. That would be a very impressive species combination...

These fish are all going in tanks built around the walls of the extended cafe, not in a dedicated aquarium, but yes several of the tanks are fairly large.

I believe there is one legal breeder of Lungfish in Australia which can sell them!

Ahh sorry, I wrote 'aquarium' when I meant 'tank', but very good to know some of them are pretty large already. Need to get another visit on the cards soon...

Would be interesting to know what breeding success exists within the Aquarium trade versus zoos (the latter I really have no clues and do not exactly have high expectations either ...)?????
