The elephant cow Csami is not pregnant.
Elephant cows should have the first calf under 25 years of age. And Csami is 25 years old, and still had no calf, although she mated several times unsuccessfully with Kibo. The mating was not successful because it is too old for the first calf. If the cows have the first calf under 25 years of age, they can still give birth at the age of 45. Chupa is 16 years old and is expecting her first calf next year. With Csami, however, began efforts to breed probably too late. It is sad, because it comes from the wild and its genes are nowhere present. So hopefully Erfurt will expand her herd of elephants in the future with Chupa. I therefore hope that the calf will be a female so that Chupa can establish her own matriarchal herd.

This is really amazing news. I was a little worried about how it would turn out, because Chupa is first time mother, no cow in Erfurt has experience with offspring, and not even zookeepers yet. It's great that it's a cow. This is probably the most significant calf this year for African elephants for EEP.
