Zoo Knoxville Knoxville Zoo

This has the potential to be the next great American zoo exhibit. Thanks for the post. Tim and I discussed this upcoming development in our Top 100 zoo book and Zoo Knoxville has a bright future with its 2.5-acre reptile and amphibian area. I can imagine that once the exhibit is open then it will extend an average zoo visit by an hour...and in a neat twist visitors will also be able to see otters next to cold-blooded animals!

As a herpetological guy, this sounds absolutely fantastic. 2.5 acres devoted to reptiles and amphibians, plus a fantastic species list that includes ploughshare tortoises among others? This could end up being one of my favorite exhibit complexes ever if I make my to Knoxville.

Yes, it could be before April 1st that they were born.

(In all seriousness and not to come across as condescending but rather lighthearted, April 1st as in April Fools, though I don't know whether or not keeper-staff and the Zoo's PR team would put that much effort into pranking a highly niche group of people *unless I'm mistaken, I'd love to be wrong more than anything apropos of the niche being smaller than initially thought and the zoo community being greater than one would initially think*)

Well, I think I fell in the joke but I investigated and Home's hingeback tortoises actually exists so.. Actually, they had a zoo to you video with the hatchlings so it wasn't related to April Fools.

Not saying that the tortoises don't exist, but rather banking an article on a major news site on a rare species as if it was the biggest news ever. (I probably should've given the joke a better setup)

I just got the news from their FB site not any major news site.

Knoxville Zoo and herp team are known for some pretty neat breeding results! For them, and thankfully their PR department can care less about April Fools' pranksters and bring on the herp news that matters!

Well yes, Home's hingeback and flat-tailed tortoises exist and as both fairly delicate with specific requirements to thrive in captivity it is and should be of global importance they managed breeding, hatching and healthy hatchling. Basically, they have mastered the art of good husbandry in both species.
