Please can anyone help with some information I looking for about the snow leopards at San Francisco. Have the cubs born June 7, 2018 been named and what are they? And can anyone tell me what their mother's name originally was and which zoo in Canada she arrived from?

Hello
The answers to your questions.
The Cubs still have not been officially named.
The Mama's Name is Ana.
Information I have does not reflect her from Canada, but from Rolling Hills Zoo.
Hope that helps.

Thanks leo811. Is it unusual for San Francisco to have not named the cubs after nearly 2 years?
Can you help with any update on Krashniya (aka 'Kelley')?

I recently managed to get sight of a copy of the Snow Leopard SSP Breeding & Transfer Plan and from that worked out that she was born at Granby on 30 May 2015. Her father, Makalu, was born at Rolling Hills, so she is probably owned by them. She may have moved to Rolling Hills before being sent to San Francisco, but I may never know (zoos don't like answering questions about individual animals - although I did get a phone call from someone on the staff at SF telling me the real names of the Orangutans!).

Haha It's unusual that Zoo Staff would call you and give any information, let alone real names!

The Cubs names were auctioned off at Zoofest 2009. Zoofest fundraiser is always in April. Personally I didn't like that they would not have names for ten months. But they wanted money for the names so the Cubbies had to wait. As of earlier this year, the winning bidder still had not submitted names. In my opinion, at this point the names the Keepers chose and use should be their names of record. ... The whole naming and renaming thing there is a big issue for me.

Niya lives in the off exhibit area, formerly the public space FCC (Feline Conservation Center). She was moved there when Ana and Raj arrived. Last in Ana's pregnancy, Raj was also moved there. Late last year, Ana was moved there. The Cubs are on exhibit. As of earlier this year, Niya was doing fine. I think like species company is good for her.

Thanks for the info on Ana. I know I have it somewhere, but my notes are scattered, I just go from memory mostly. I knew Ana was young but don't remember her being that young when Cubs were born. ... The other notation on Zoo Docs mentions Columbus Zoo, who may own her and Raj. I don't know.

Orangutan info: Ollie came from Erie Zoo. Amoi from Omaha Zoo.

The call was just long enough for the caller to mention the names Ollie and Amoi. I get the feeling it wasn't officially sanctioned so had to be as brief as possible.

Not fair on the individuals to be renamed, particularly great apes who must get used to their names from an early age. I realize it's anthropomorphism, but if Twycross Zoo can remove all the individual information on their great apes - for fear visitors would call out their names and 'confuse' them - then an orangutan's name must have some significance to that individual?

I suspect that whatever names the Snowie cubs end up with may well be changed if or when they are moved to another zoo. And who buys naming rights and then doesn't bother to name them! I'd would have had the names ready - sensible names - before buying the rights.
