ZooChat Big Year 2020

At Moonlit today

304. White-fronted chat Epthianura albifrons

Always fun to see little owls in the area! Only very poor views today unfortunately, but definitely a fun species and one of the last ones I needed to complete the set of 'gettable' Belgian owls! Just barn owl left now, which I have heard a few times.

BIRDS:

202) Little owl, Athene noctua

INVERTS:
21) Emperor dragonfly, Anax imperator
That went easier than expected! A trip to Belgium's second field observation of Blyth's reed warbler was unfortunately unsuccessful, but on the way there I got a barn owl and while there I got a few other great birds, and finally also some good inverts! Some moth IDs still pending.

BIRDS:
203) Western barn owl, Tyto alba
204) European turtle dove, Streptopelia turtur
205) Eurasian golden oriole, Oriolus oriolus
206) Great reed warbler, Acrocephalus arundinaceus

INVERTS:
22) Dwarf cream wave, Idaea fuscovenosa
23) Yellow shell, Camptogramma bilineata
24) Lime-speck pug, Eupithecia centaureata
25) Willow beauty, Peribatodes rhomboidaria
26) Poplar hawk-moth, Laothoe populi

27) White ermine, Spilosoma lubricipeda
28) Water ermine, Spilosoma urticae
29) Cinnabar moth, Tyria jacobaeae
30) Common wainscot, Mythimna pallens
31) Southern wainscot, Mythimna straminea
32) Silver Y, Autographa gamma
33) Hook-marked straw moth, Agapeta hamana
34) Gold triangle, Hypsopygia costalis
35) Thistle ermine, Myelois circumvoluta
36) Garden grass-veneer, Chrysoteuchia culmella
37) Satin grass-veneer, Crambus perlella
38) Marbled yellow pearl, Evergestis extimalis
39) Black-tailed skimmer, Orthetrum cancellatum
40) Broad-bodied chaser, Libellula depressa

41) Daddy longlegs, Phalangium opilio
42) Morning-glory plume moth, Emmelina monodactyla

Still one or two more to ID, but here's already a few more!

BIRDS:
207) Common grasshopper warbler, Locustella naevia

INVERTS:
43) Isle of Wight piercer, Grapholita gemmiferana

44) European firebug, Pyrrhocoris apterus
45) Small heath, Coenonympha pamphilus

Birds
48) American Goldfinch Carduelis tristis
49) House Finch Haemorhous mexicanus
50) Eastern Bluebird Sialia sialis

~Thylo

From a short walk after work the other day:

52) Baltimore Oriole Icterus galbula
53) Swamp Sparrow Melospiza georgiana

~Thylo

Not an especially successful day bird-wise in north Notts today but an interesting addition - I'd heard them before but this was my first sighting of this non-native-but-established species in the UK.

Amphibians:
3. Marsh Frog - Pelophylax ridibundus

:)

Looking for nightjars is always one of the most exciting birding days each year! I don't get them anywhere super closeby so I always have to make a dedicated evening trip if I want to see them, and they truly never disappoint. Such fantastic birds.

BIRDS:

208) European nightjar, Caprimulgus europaeus

INVERTS:
51) Summer chafer, Amphimallon solstitiale

More quality over quantity these days. I went looking for a Red-backed Shrike, but did not find it, but I did find a Black Woodpecker, which is probably my favourite bird in the Netherlands. At more or less the exact same spot where I saw the woodpecker I also found a nest of Little Spotted Woodpecker and a Red Fox walked by there too. Yesterday I decided to cycle around a large heathland/forest area nearby to find another favourite bird: European Nightjar. Their song is just amazing, as are their display flights. I found some as well as many large mammals.

159. Black Woodpecker
160. European Nightjar

Mammals

16. Red Fox
17. Wild Boar
18. Red Deer

Went to the Beaver place twice in the past days to show them to other people, the Beavers were very obliging and we could observe them for prolonged times, sometimes only at 1 meter distance... On the way back on one of the evenings I saw a new bat species for the year:

19. Serotine

I went to Apenheul last weekend and it proved again to be the easiest place for zoonerds to see Grass Snakes. There is a large population living in the moats around most of the islands, especially around the Bonobo and Gorilla islands. Apenheul is also a good place for most of the commoner forest birds and has a variety of dragonflies too.

161. Spotted Flycatcher

4. Grass Snake

27. Broad-bodied Chaser
28. Azure Damselfly
29. Hairy Dragonfly
30. Brown Hawker
31. Emperor Dragonfly

And finally another nice bird which hangs around in the heathland areas this time of year and a butterfly that showed up in the garden.

162. Red-backed Shrike

32. Large Skipper

Interesting! I never knew this. I'll have to make sure to look for them next time, then!
