ZSL London Zoo London Zoo Aquarium: the Final Months

.
' This time the image of Queen Mary at its opening caught my eye. I think King George V is coming down the steps behind her. '

Marketing and publicity department disaster. This is a well known photo and the King has been cropped out of it by whoever made the information board. I imagine they didn't know what the King looked like and someone told them he was on the queen's left... which is the right in the image...

They did previously have this correct.

Aha! Thank you. I must have seen this photo on a sign at the Aquarium several years ago, but I didn't recognise it at all.
There is a better picture of the old sign at London Zoo - Aquarium - underwater since 1853
And you can even purchase a print at King George V and Queen Mary at the London Zoo Aqu... or a licence to use it at Bridgeman Images
Note the other old London Zoo photos by F W Bond available at these sites.

The cut away diagram is also reproduced clearly in Barrington Johnson's book and I am fairly sure in the Guillery historic buildings book.

It feels like much of London Zoo is slowly decaying. Like if there was a zoo that desperately needed money to revamp itself, it'd be this one.

Does anyone know what will replace it
I’d suggest it’s more a question of whether London Zoo makes it out of the current financial hole. Specifics of what might happen next if they do so are for further down the line....

A new freshwater aquarium opened at Whipsnade last summer and there are plans to exhibit some marine species at London Zoo in the BUGS building, although the overall number of species will be greatly reduced.

Of course the financial problems, exacerbated by the enforced closure during the Covid-19 lockdown, may well impact the future plans.

i went to london zoo yesterday (5/7/2020), the entrance doors have been removed and a brick wall has been built in its place.

I think I have posted this elsewhere but the marine offer in 'BUGS'; renamed agains as 'Tiny Giants' is disappointing. One nice large tank which is bigger than the old main coral tank but certainly doesn't make up for the multiple displays there were, and very few fish are included. Then just two very small aquaria, one for upside down anemone and one for moon jellyfish.

Oh dear, that does look depressing. You'd think seeing as London Zoo had the world's first public aquarium, they'd honour their legacy and do something a bit more impressive than that.

A massive understatement, disappointing? I would prefer to be a lot less polite!! It is shocking (and that is not the word I would usually use, s**t would be more appropriate!!)
