US zoos closed due to COVID-19 and duration

The governor of California has just ordered all zoos in the state to close again.
Newsom orders statewide re-closure of indoor dining, limits on church services, salons
No doubt, the other zoo's will probably join them also. People just won't keep their masks on. Supposed to keep 6feet distance but how many zoo's have a trail wide enough for 3 groups of families. I watched as MEMBERS at our zoo took off their masks as soon as they got in and wouldn't put them back on as they got close to others!!!!!!

I don’t live in California or go to this zoo but I’m really scared for the Oakland zoo. They really need more funding and if the residents actually followed the rules at the zoo the Oakland might be fine. But I don’t know anymore. I hope they can make it through this.

Not just Oakland but San Francisco Zoo, California Academy of Sciences, Aquarium of the Bay, Monterey Bay Aquarium, and Aquarium of the Pacific are all concerns at this point. Many of the others are hurting, but at least were able to gain a bit of revenue for a little while.

A lot of zoos are having to stay closed because of the incompetence of the general public. It’s really sad because zoos, aquariums, museums and other institutions are having to permanently close due to the many people not following the rules.

Don't forget about small places like my friends at Cat Haven (and others like EFBC Feline Conservation Center, Wild Wonders, Monterey Zoo, California Wolf Center, etc). If this goes on for more than a month I could realistically see some of these places shutting down for good. Even big names like San Diego that seem invincible are going to be in serious trouble. Just look at the size of their staff and the costs involved (not to mention the cost of feeding such a massive animal collection). The longer this goes on the more zoos will close and the question then becomes what to do with the animals? As an aside, I let my San Diego membership expire one year ago but they have been pushing hard lately to get me to rejoin and have started sending their monthly magazine again. (I am not rejoining, but I give them an A for effort).

From what I saw, it looks like indoor operations are to be closing but not regarding full closure of all zoos. Maybe zoos will for sure close again with the spike in cases and not surprising at all but so far are open except for their indoor operations. This is from Governor Newsom’s own twitter page and from
the COVID-19 updates page for a California. https://twitter.com/gavinnewsom/status/1282752861835649024?s=21

That was my interpretation but it is still unclear. Hopefully we can get some confirmation from the zoos themselves.

I hope that zoos do make statements regarding their operations. I agree with others that we have done a poor job across the country with social distancing or wearing a mask. It’s not even a political stance, it’s just for the well-being of others and to slow this down. No it’s not 100% guarantee to stop you from getting sick but to reduce the likelihood if we all cooperate. Yes it can uncomfortable and no one wants wear one willingly. Hopefully this gets better and we can all be do our part, please be safe and socially distant my friends.

I'd like for zoos to be open, as we all would, but I'm no longer convinced that's a good idea.

I'm going to ameliorate my initial thoughts and say that if zoos put in the effort, I think it can work out decently.

I’m sure as you know already Colorado Springs shouldn’t be used as a great example of people taking COVID seriously. I’ll personally visit Denver soon and see if the guests there are better behaved but I personally agree with your sentiments on the guests at CMZ.

It feels a bit unfair to compare the two now that we're under a statewide mask order, but Denver Zoo felt more prepared than CMZ overall. The people were generally better behaved as well, but I'll do a brief write up in the appropriate space.
