Movie review rant 2020

Captain America: Civil War
The first act of this movie is really boring. It's just the Avengers sitting around talking about politics for a while. I was worried the whole movie would be that boring, but the second and third acts were very good. The first act is the only thing holding this movie back from being as good as CA:WS.

Another complaint I have is that this isn't really a Captain America movie. It's an Avengers movie. They're all in. Heck, they even introduce two new Avengers! Why is this considered a Captain America film while A:AOU isn't a Hawkeye film?

Really? The big terror attack in Lagos didn't do anything for you? It was bloody brilliant, and it sets the whole plot of the movie in to gear. Way better than the opening of Age Of Ultron.

The reason that so many characters were used is so Disney executives could see how the Russo brothers coped with an ensemble cast. It was a test run to see if they could do Infinity War and Endgame justice, and they passed with flying colours. And it's definitely a Cap movie (the best Cap movie at that) in my eyes, even if I do like to refer to it as Avengers 2.5! ;)

Spider-Man: Homecoming
I had heard that the movies get better in Phase 3, and so far it appears that is indeed true! Lots of action, a good plot, and the very different setting compared to the other Marvel movies make this a really good film. I was also surprised just how funny it was, I wasn't really expecting that. The high-tech Spider-Man also sets this apart from other versions of Spider-Man, which is nice.

Black Panther
This movie is incredible. Beautiful scenery, amazing costumes (although some look extremely painful to wear), a great plot, and lots of action. I also love all the scores in this movie, especially the use of drums in every score (and I mean EVERY score). This is my second favorite MCU film so far, only behind Ant-Man.

There is one thing holding this movie back from being as good as Ant-Man: the ending fight scene just lasted way too long. If it had been a bit shorter it would have gotten the top spot. My only other issue with this movie is that after seeing all this Stark tech in previous movies, it's hard to see how Wakanda is so advance. Tony created TWO sentient beings, and yet magnet levitation and some sand that moves into shapes are supposed to be impressive?

I'm back to disagree with you... :p
This movie is incredible.
In my opinion this is one of the worst MCU movies, the biggest saving graces are Kilmonger and M'Baku who both give awesome performances and own the screen when they're on it, Andy Serkis returning (albeit briefly) as Klaue and singing Haddaway, and then I think that's it really. I think this has probably the worst visual effects in any MCU film to date, especially when compared to GOTG or Dr Strange.

Terrible CGI really, really let's this finale down. The battle rhino's look fake as sh*t and the final confrontation between T'Challa and Erik is awful, you can almost see the green screen.
it's hard to see how Wakanda is so advance.
But they have Vibranium, which according to this movie can do everything, from making an indestructible suit, to saving a man's life, to running MagLev trains... Nah, I don't get it either...

It may be worth checking out the MCU thread on here after you've finished the saga @birdsandbats and then do your own ranking. :)

@Brum Both Spawn and Meteor Man aren't part of the Marvel Universe, so don't be surprised that I omitted them.;)

To be fair, I haven't seen Doctor Strange yet.

I can't really disagree with that but everything else looked good to me.

Another thing, where was Captain America in this movie? He's supposed to be hiding in Wakanda, right?

I liked Black Panther. Definietly think its one of the better MCU movies.

At least, those I've seen.

@Brum No worries. You're right when we talk about superhero movies in general. I just hope that the people in charge at MCU, given the current social tensions, are not going to extend on the postmodern PC angle, including that weird hostile behaviour of Shuri (God, I hated that character) and M'Baku against the Martin Freeman character. As a white male, according to some, I'm not allowed to have an opinion on this (...), but it struck me as odd and racist. And if you think about it, the whole idea of Wakanda and its people as an Afrofuturist wonderland does not hold any water.

Have you not? You must have skipped it then as it's supposed to be after Homecoming... Actually you've missed a fair few films if you're going chronologically.

Nope, he just dumps Bucky and leaves! :p

My uncle is a massive MCU fan and he gave me his watch order. It's mostly based on release order but has a few films switched around.

You know what I'm thinking the problem is? He has got all the covers mixed up and is thinking the good movies are the ones with the bad movies' titles, and vice versa. There's no other explanation.
I'm watching them all on Disney+ so I don't know how that could have happened...?:p

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
This movie is infinitely better than the first one. However, the first one was so bad that "infinitely better" can only be so good. This is honestly a great movie. It's very funny, and has lots of action but not too much. The biggest problem with this movie lies in the plot. The twist of
Peter's dad being evil can be seen coming from a mile away, and said villain's motivations aren't very clear.

That being said this movie is very funny. The plot issues push this movie back a lot, if these issues did not exist this would be on par with Ant-Man, but for now I must say all of the Phase 3 movies so far as well as Ant-Man beat this movie out.

You're on thin ice here, I'm with @Batto on this... :p

Give Doctor Strange a watch, then watch it again the following day. It was a bit of a slow burner for me but it is a genuinely great film. :)

It's been quite a while since I watched the Guardians of the Galaxy movies, but I seem to recall that the sequel was inferior to the first movie. It was still good, but all the main characters had somehow become indestructible (pretty much literally) and it was really just trying too hard. And did the ending come down to a fist fight with a planet? That's how I remember it.

Edit: this is what I wrote briefly about it...
I liked Guardians 2 but found the characters much less likeable than in the first one. Drax, for example, had turned into just a mean-spirited dummy. And all the characters were now invincible gods apparently - what's that about? Also there was an inescapable feeling that the movie existed for no other reason than to fit in a last jigsaw piece before Infinity War, whereas Ragnarok didn't. Baby Groot was awesome though.
