This list is based on the official information from the zoo's staff and zoo's official communication vehicles; All these species exist in the zoo nowadays, I won't add the ones that are not displayed and/or are in the zoo's private area. Counting all the animals (except butterflies), the zoo has near 4500 animals from 256 species. The zoo is also a rehabilitation institution, so there are many species of animals that live there just for rehabilitation/conservation, so I didn’t include them here once they are located out of the visitation area. This way, I’m listing here the 174 species of animals you can see in a visit to Belo Horizonte’s zoo and aquarium.

Obs: some animals in the zoo's species list are named with very local names, (specially a few bird and fish species) so I couldn't find their real name in english.

Thats quite a nice list !
For the species for which you don't know the English name, try to take a decent photo - in the Gallery already seen you can make good photos - and place them in the Gallery. In this way we can try to find-out the English names for them.

Thank you, I'll try! Actually, the zoo has a huge bird complex that i never had the chance to entirely photograph. gonna post some and edit the names if I find out. Also, I'll search a little more and try to find out more species names. Even having been to this zoo more than 40 times, I haven't got pictures of all the animals, I wanna photograph them all in my next visit... looking forward for the end of the quarantine in my country...

Thanks for the correction. I commited a mistake, in portuguese we use the same word to refer to ferrets and grisons, wich is "furão", and once the zoo sign sais "furão brasileiro", I thought this would be the translation. Gonna change it at the list

There is a time limit on editing posts; I believe for regular members it is 60 minutes from the post time. It mainly works better for fixing mistakes or typos you notice within a few minutes, rather than continually editing or updating lists.

I was thinking of taking a closer look over your list and seeing if I could identify the English names for some more of the species; that might help give you enough edits to justify posting an updated list for everyone :)

Ah, yes, so i'm probably gonna take notes of all the species names so I can update everything in one time, so that I don't need to make many updates... How can I substitute the list's post after I finish the complete list? Sorry for the many questions, as a new user I don't know a lot about this platform...

I just meant post your updated list here, as a separate stand-alone post like the one you just did. That's how non-staff members on the site, like myself, run their species lists (the moderators have greatly expanded editing abilities for their lists).

Although David has already answered this I thought I would add something that you might find interesting.

The grison is often kept and commonly sold as a "pet" in Brazil (despite it being illegal) in a way similar to the ferret in Europe and North America and the same name "ferret" is applied to it.

This is why there are many individuals of this species that end up being confiscated by the environmental police and brought to zoos throughout the country (or just dumped in a cage by anonymous "owners" on a zoos doorstep in the early hours of the morning).

Yes, that's a sad true, and it unfortunately happened once more a few days ago in BH... this time not with grisons, but with two hedgehogs and a few reptiles, in this case, taken by the police from ilegal owners...
