Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium News

Hmmm. Maybe Okinawa was the first, I don't know, but this must have happened several years ago, and now giant manta rays are in a quite number of aquariums in Japan and North America at least... So, at least is an outdated new, if not just a wrong one.

Those are Reef manta ray, not Oceanic manta ray as the article says.

Hm, then the ones in Georgia aquarium are Manta alfredi? I tought they was M. birostris! Really none of the Asian aquariums holded them before? (I vaguely remember something about mantas in Singapore... reef too?)

When you go to the Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium, make sure to take the small path behind the dolphin show stadium and look through the portholes. Those unlabeled pools are home to a pygmy killer whale, pantropical spotted dolphins, and rough-toothed dolphins. I'm sure I was the only visitor that day who went and saw them!

World's First! A Black Manta ray Was Born in Captivity!

On August 5, 2024, the black manta ray (a melanistic individual of reef manta ray) kept in the "Kuroshio Sea" large tank gave birth to a healthy black baby. This marks the first instance of a black manta reproducing in captivity in the world. The baby has been moved to the backyard and is swimming energetically.

Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium is the only place in the world to have successfully bred reef manta ray, achieving this feat multiple times. A male individual born in 2008 has grown well and has reached sexual maturity. He is currently in the private sea enclosure managed by the aquarium, aiming to breed with a female born in 2010. If this breeding is successful, it will result in the world’s first third-generation captive-bred reef manta ray. The enclosure also houses other species not exhibited at Churaumi Aquarium, such as the Chilean devil ray and the world’s first tank-born tiger shark, which has now grown to a length of 3 meters.

A black manta ray born at the aquarium celebrated its first birthday recently. This manta was born on August 5, 2024, in the “Kuroshio Sea” main tank, with a disc width of 160 cm and weighing 42 kg at birth. It has grown steadily without any health issues and now measures 270 cm across and weighs 160 kg. Its mother, also black, remains on display, allowing visitors to see both mother and calf swimming together in the Kuroshio Sea tank. Such a simultaneous exhibition of mother and offspring is unique worldwide to Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium.

According to an annual report, newborn manta calves have unstable swimming right after birth. To prevent abrasions and other injuries, divers supported the calf in the main tank for about 12 hours, successfully establishing a method for safely transferring it to a temporary holding facility. The aquarium has also conducted tag-and-release studies of long-term captive reef manta rays to investigate their capability for regional endothermy.

The annual report also described efforts involving the bowmouth guitarfish. Six newborn individuals were transported to Oceanogràfic in Spain and Lisbon Oceanarium in Portugal to begin monitoring their growth and sexual maturation through international collaboration. Furthermore, in partnership with Georgia Aquarium and Shedd Aquarium, two individuals were fitted with electronic tags and released to track their behavior and survival in the wild, contributing to the development of conservation measures.

According to their Instagram page, Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium has begun exhibiting the swimming sea cucumber Enypniastes eximia.

This species has a number of fanciful English common names, such as "Headless Chicken Monster" and "Pink See-through Phantasia"
