Animals You've Seen That Few Zoochatters Have Seen

She died earlier this year sadly, though it seems ZTL has yet to reflect this. She definitely had a good run, having arrived in the UK in 1996 and living a good 24 years in captivity.

Her name was Cugat :)

She was a beautiful animal and I'm glad she spent the majority of her life in such good care :)

Did you see any of the endemic birds while you lived there? I'm not sure any ZooChatter has seen any of those except for the waterfowl.

Yeah, I've seen a few. Mostly water birds though:

Zoos:

Hawaiian Hawk
Hawaiian Owl
Hawaiian Goose
Hawaiian Duck
Laysan Teal

Wild:

Hawaiian Duck X Mallard Hybrid
Hawaiian Gallinule
Hawaiian Coot
Hawaiian Black-Necked Stilt

A list of rare marine species I've seen:
Hawaiian deep anthias
O'opu species (don't remember which ones)
Atlantic tarpon
Bowmouth guitarfish
Silky shark
Blacktip shark
Madagascar panchax
Haplochromis ishmaeli
Giant isopod (again, don't know the specific species)
Green sawfish
Walrus
Pearl River stingray
The isopods are likely Bathynomus giganteus or Bathynomus doederleinii, both are very similar. Where did you see them?

When I went to Duisburg Zoo, Germany, a couple of years back, I saw an Amazon River Dolphin. I have reason to believe based on my research that this is the only zoo in Europe at least that has ever had the species, although I don't know how many have been exhibited elsewhere in the world.

Yes, they are the only holder outside of South America. However, many ZooChatters have seen that animal, many visit Duisburg for the sole purpose of seeing that dolphin.

No, this thread is specifically few ZooChatters. Walrus are rare but as many of the collections that keep them get high traffic on this site it doesn't fit this thread.
oh, right, I give in...I think probably a lot less European Zoochatters have seen them compared to in the USA though. There are only a couple of European zoos that have them currently.

Does Long-beaked Echidna counts?

I guess even less Zoochatters have seen Fawn Antechinus, Kultarr and Mulgara.

I believe there's a breeding center in Venezuela which keeps this species.

Apart from maybe Pairi Daiza, which high traffic collections keep Walrus that are visited by so many ZooChatters that they are not qualified for this thread? I can only think of a couple which MAYBE fit your description.

Any of the SeaWorlds.

I was mainly thinking of Pairi Daiza and SeaWorld San Diego.

Again, Paira Daiza have only had them on show for a few months, in a year when many people are compromised over zoo visiting. The only other place in Europe now is Hamburg.

Dolfinarium Harderwijk still keeps the species. L'Oceanogràfic kept walrus for many years, till 2019. I don't know how many Zoochatters visited Valencia, but it's quite popular among "normal" tourists. Several Russian institutions also keep walrusses.
