Yorkshire Wildlife Park Yorkshire Wildlife Park News 2020

YWP are doing a massive expansion over several phases, the first of which has opened since lockdown. I’m sure the new exhibits will have been identified for a long time. The gelada monkeys and hyenas had been at the Park for months before they went on display in June.

@YWP fan can you please tell me when all of the phases will be complete? I presume that it will take several years? I have personal experience of building work as my parents have been building/renovating their abode for almost 13 years on and off!

@pipaluk a piece of string can be very long yet at the same time a piece of string can be very short. The Coronavirus has probably delayed the expansion project but I hope that it still goes ahead as planned,as the saying goes it’s better late than neaver.

My point was that @YWP fan will have no idea of when all the phases WILL be complete, as even the zoo probably won't, even if they have planned dates!

I think the original idea was Phases over 5 years. There was a delay last year with the new walkway after flooding and some bird breeding in the wetlands I think. Building has continued during lockdown and Phase 1 was complete shortly after the Park reopened in June. There is a lot of activity going on after the red pandas with what looks like several new enclosures. Sea lions from Whipsnade are due in the next few months..

I was there yesterday and the head of carnivores was telling people they were hopeful of pups but couldn’t confirm yet as they didn’t want to disturb Mum as she was guarding the den.
I would lean towards this statement - all hyena species can be very fussy when it comes to pups, so fingers crossed! :)

There are now photos showing at least one cub being posted in YWP fan groups on Facebook. :)

From Facebook:

"A rare pair of Spotted Hyena cubs have been born at Yorkshire Wildlife Park!

The one month-old twins are now beginning to venture out of their den and explore the new 'Hyenas of Harar' reserve

Cub's weigh around 2lb at birth and are born with dark brown fur. This coat remains for around 6 weeks before it starts changing into their distinctive spotted markings!"

Come on mate, not shocking? It was a very small concrete oval swimming pool.

It had zero stimulation, no natural features, no current and was falling into disrepair.

I’d hate to see your version of a shocker; a bath tub perhaps...

I worked at Whipsnade for many years and that pool was Universally loathed and good riddance to it....
