Burgers' Zoo Burgers' Zoo 2020

I saw an Orange-fronted Fruit Dove again yesterday mixed with the Scissor-billed Starlings, must have been hiding well on my last visit.

On my latest 2 visits i also didnt see fruit doves there. Hiding can definitely be an option. But maybe it was any offspring from the bush that is currently housed in that aviary?

In the Bush they only keep 3 males ;), but they have some breeding pairs behind the scenes.

I saw a orange-fronted fruit dove with the scissor-billed starlings as well, on July the 22.

Bird-'news' ( some already several months old ) from Burgers :

After several years of disappionted results with the white-rumped shamas, 3 new pairs were placed in breeding-situations and all 3 pairs proofed to be good choises and all 3 pairs have already produced chicks :)
Northern cardinals in the Desert are making regulary making breeding-attemps but without succes. Behind the scenes another pair is kept and this one has already produced 4 young.
Painted buntings are also doing well and 2 pairs have already raised 6 young'

The Violaceous Euphonia in the Mangrove have raised 3 chicks. This species has only been in the collection since 1 year, so it is a first breeding for the zoo and it means that all passerines in breeding situations have already bred in the Mangrove.

In total 13 White-rumped Shama were born, as well as 3 Galahs and a number of Scissor-billed Starlings.

The 2 Lion cubs are doing well and now visible to the public.

Out of all the 76 living Sri Lankan Leopards registered in the studbook (Europe + Singapore + Colombo), 22 have been born in Burgers', although the current breeding pair has only has 2 living offspring (now in CERZA and Terra Natura).

Interesting to know is that 36 Sri Lankan Leopards have been born in Burgers' since 1990, a very impressive number given the low number of individuals in captivity. Indeed only 22 of these are still alive.

2 Pairs of crested quail doves have been released in the bush last week! During my visit today i saw a total of 2, and saw them several times, a very cool addition to the bush.

All 4 animals are young animals, age ranging from 1 - 3 .

This year has also been a very good year for the luzon breeding hearts, with more then 10 young this year!
