- Release is part of a comprehensive effort to bolster macaw numbers threatened by habitat loss, fires, poaching, and other factors
- Low-birth weight chicks are removed from nests and raised in field labs then released in the wild
- Release gives “Hope in times of darkness"
The release is part of ongoing efforts by WCS conservationists and Guatemala’s National Council of Protected Areas (CONAP) to bolster macaw numbers in the reserve, estimated at approximately 300 individuals. Scarlet macaws are increasingly threatened by poaching for the illegal wildlife trade, along with habitat loss, largely driven by intentional forest fires, cattle ranching, and the expansion of human settlements.
