Let's see what everyone makes of this one..... the two collections comprising the Aspinall Foundation (Howletts and Port Lympne) face off against the three collections comprising Wild Planet aka Whitley (Paignton, Living Coasts and Newquay) in the category of OCEAN, COAST, RIVER AND WETLANDS.... or as I'll call the category going forward, WATER.

How ironic, considering the current situation on the forum. I was originally considering to boycott the British Isles cup but I might as well throw it in the ring.

My vote won't be counting Living Coasts due to the fact it's closed.

Looking at both parks for each, while Aspinall's definitely has the better enclosures, it's offerings in this department are left to be desired with Water Buffalo, Fishing Cat and Margay being the main mention. It comes down to bad category luck, it's obvious by going through the gallery that carnivores and primates are it's strong suits.

Wild Planet/Whitely on the other hand has the opposite problem, it's enclosures are generally small in size and lacking compared to those at Aspinalls, but in good faith I cannot vote 2-1 for a collection with less than ten species in this category so my vote will go to Wild Planet/Whitely. It has a wide range of species in varying exhibit quality, species include Red and White Crake, Fishing Cat, Giant Waxy Monkey Frog, Oriental Small Clawed Otter, Brazilian Tapir, Great White Pelicans, Trinidad Stream Frog and more.

If it wasn't for the mediocre exhibit quality of Whitely it would be 3-0

Verdict: 2-1 Whitely.

I would strongly suggest you are being unfair in this regard :p one can hardly say that the tiny number of enclosures for this category at Aspinall (I have no idea why you are counting Margay incidentally) are vastly superior to the many relevant enclosures at the two/three Whitley collections, which - even if one disregards Living Coasts as you do - include a vast number of amphibians, crocodilians, waterbirds and other such species.

To compare the single shared species I can recall offhand (Fishing Cat)

Port Lympne

The latter is hardly "mediocre" :p

I didn't see the full extent of the fishing cat enclosure I suppose, as soon as I saw Newquays otter enclosure I was like ew yuck. I'll be changing my vote to 3-0.

Anyone feel up to mounting a defence of the Aspinall collections?
