Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden Cincinnati Zoo News 2020

also I’m kinda curious why they didn’t bring Ashas daughter 6 year old Mondika to Dallas. Isn’t she still too young to keep her separate from her mother??

At six years old, Mondika is able to do things without needing her mother to supervise her or sustain her. She'll be able to learn new behaviors by watching the other gorillas in her troop. Animals in captivity tend to do things much sooner than their wild counterpart, with breeding at younger ages being one of the most common.

Mona and Asha have been in separate groups for almost 2 years now

that seems kind of an odd thing to do. That would mean Mondika would be 3 to 4 when that happened. And I’m only saying is odd cause I thought gorillas were family oriented animals but maybe I misread that somewhere...

Western lowland gorilla offspring nurse for several years after being born, so Mondika would've just been weaned off of her mother by the time they were separated. There had to have been a solid reason for them to do it, as the zoo wouldn't have separated them just for the fun of it.

Side note: Asha has one full-sister at Dallas, fifteen-year-old Megan. I wouldn't be surprised if the zoo tries to introduce the two sisters together. If the two were mixed, Asha would also be able to meet her nephew, Mbani.

Dallas has four mature males: Juba, B'Wenzi, Shana, and Zola. All four of them were born in 2002, the same year as Asha.

@EsserWarrior the article said she’s their to be a role model for the zoos two juvenile gorillas born at Dallas Zoo last year so she’s most likely going to be reunited with Meghan because Meghan’s son Mbani is only a year old

I didn't even see the second half of the article!

Visitors at Dallas will be lucky to see the group together!

At the time Mondika was separated from Asha the group was going through a lot of upheaval. Anju had recently died. They were trying to pair Elle with Mara, Chewy or Samantha. There was some progress with Mara but Mara hasn't been in Jomo's group for awhile. I think Gladys enjoyed playing mom most. Asha had to be separated due to some kind of social issue between her and one or more of the other females. I don't recall all of the details, not that I'm even sure all the details were given. At that time the zoo had to make a choice, keep Mondika with mom or dad. In the end they decided Mondika was old enough that it was more important to keep her with Jomo so she could be with her sisters. That decision may have set them up well for a future breeding group of females.

And I don’t know why the Lion-tailed Macaques and Francois Langurs aren’t at jungle trails anymore.
The animals are rotated ;). There's a possibility the macaques have passed away, but I'm not sure on that one.

I haven't seen either species since 2016 and afterwards Tamarins/Howlers/and Sakis took their place. Speaking of which, there were crowned guenons in the indoor sifaka exhibit last week.
Same here, though I feel I may have seen the macaques in 2018? Never have seen any trace of the langurs at the zoo, only ever seen them on the website.

Langurs and Macaques have not been at the zoo in several years (since 2015-2016), both species were sent out and the zoo phased out of macaques entirely with Japanese Macaques in 2019. This was in favor of being able to exhibit more South American species. The guenons rotate in indoor sifaka along with the Angolan colobus on occasion.
