Nile Hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibius):
  1. Bali Safari & Marine Park
  2. Bandung Zoo
  3. Batu Secret Zoo
  4. Gembira Loka Zoo
  5. Ragunan Zoo
  6. Surabaya Zoo
  7. Taman Safari Bogor
  8. Taman Safari Prigen
Pygmy Hippopotamus (Choeropsis liberiensis)
  1. Bali Safari & Marine Park
  2. Batu Secret Zoo
  3. Surabaya Zoo
  4. Taman Safari Bogor
Formerly held:
Ocean Dream Samudra (Nile Hippopotamus)

Conclusion: Safe to say hippos are definitely one of the most popular animals to be held in Indonesia and also featured in any major zoo here. As far as I know, no Nile Hippos have underwater viewing in their exhibit though, although Pygmy Hippos in Batu Secret Zoo and Taman Safari Bogor have one.

Notes: If I miss any zoos, please add it here.

The lack of underwater viewing in hippo exhibits kinda sickens me. The same can be said to crocodile exhibits. None of the crocodile exhibits in Indonesian zoos has it.
Yeah, it's a big shame. I was lucky enough to go to Berlin and Copenhagen Zoo to see their superb underwater viewing areas for Nile Hippos, can't say the same for other Indonesians though. Most likely due to underwater viewing is very expensive and I don't think Indonesians would spend a lot just for an animal exhibit, so tI think hat's a main reason why

Interesting to see that all above mentioned zoos with Pygmy hippos also have Nile hippos!
Yep, and now that @Nandito have mentioned it, All three Taman Safari facilities kept both Niles and Pygmys. I guess this is partly due to Niles being more popular, pretty much every major zoo has them. Pygmys are a welcome addition as well. This is extremely rare in western world, as the only zoo I know in US to keep both Niles and Pygmys is San Diego, others only kept either one of them or don't even have hippos at all (many major US zoos included).

Would you have any idea about overall numbers of each species?

Quantity over quality lol

I have no idea on most of the numbers, but usually zoos would exhibit 2-3 Hippos in one exhibit (usually breeding pair and calf). Taman Safari exhibits multiple nile hippos, but not all of them together (I remember in Taman Safari Bogor in particular there are hippos exhibited in seperate zones). Pygmys are usually just 1-3 individuals though.

Does anyone know what happened to the two Nile/Common hippopotami from Australia. Solucky/Morsey was born 1987 at Auckland Zoo; and her son Tippi was born 2004. They were sent to Taman Safari Bogor around 2013. Are they still alive? Have they bred?

No idea who they are, but if they're still in Taman Safari, well most likely they are still living there as Taman Safari keeps a rather large group of hippos.

Tippi was likely imported as a breeding bull. He sired one offspring in Australia prior to his export, but it died in infancy. Solucky had three calves in Australia (including Tippi) and is still of reproductive age. I hope she has had a few calves over the last seven years.

Pygmy Hippopotamus (Choeropsis liberiensis)
  1. Bali Safari & Marine Park
  2. Batu Secret Zoo
  3. Surabaya Zoo
  4. Taman Safari Bogor
5. Taman Safari II Prigen: one breeding pair.
6. Bandung Zoo: a lone male.
7. Ragunan Zoo: one breeding pair.
8. Taman Wisata Jurug, Solo: a lone male
9. Yogyakarta Zoo: one breeding pair.
10. Sinka Island (resort?): a lone female.

Both Taman Safari Bogor (8-10 individuals) and Surabaya (6-7 individuals) hold larger groups. Bali Safari owns a breeding pair (offspring born in 2019).

Would be nice to have an update how the population has developed over time (as some of this information dates back to the last international publicly published studbook of 2012)!
