According to the Bristol Council planning website, the Zoo applied for planning permission to create a new "Heart of the Philippines" exhibit on the site of where Zona Brazil used to be. The granted permission indicates that work needs to have started within 3 years of the decision which was issued in September 2016. Presumably the Zoo would have to apply for an extension to the decision given that there does not seem to have been any real noticeable works undertaken, unless a limited amount has been done but is not visible behind the hoardings.

Bristol Zoo has confirmed the arrival of the new 1 year old female Red Panda, named Shifumi

Four Blue-spotted tree monitors have hatched:
Bizarre-looking lizards born with bodies almost entirely comprised of their tails
This is the second time Bristol Zoo has bred them; and they’re the only zoo in the UK to have done so.

As well as the blue-spotted tree monitors mentioned above, there have been several further births and developments in the Bug World and Reptile House displays, which have recently reopened for the first time since lockdown:
- A single pancake tortoise has hatched
- Two yellow-margined box turtles have hatched
- Three species of Partula snail kept in Bug World have had their global captive populations increase by approximately 10% following successful births this year
- A colony of golden weaver ants that went on-show just before lockdown have been so successful that a second colony has been able to be supplied to another UK zoo
- There are now three fourth-generation Lord Howe stick insects in Bug World as well
Some really fantastic successes in there!

@Brum can you please update us Zoochatter’s on the Gorilla family? All has gone stum regarding Kala’s bay that was born back in September, I hope nothing untoward has happened to ever of them. Also are any new Gorillas going to join the Bristol Zoo gorilla family. Also can you please deliver a news overview from the entire Zoo?

Keepers are hand rearing the male infant and they are looking for a name for him:
During the day, he is looked after in the Gorilla House to allow Kala and other apes to see him, smell him and be near him, to ensure he is accepted as a family member.
At night he is cared for by keepers at zoo-owned accommodation on the site.
Motuku means “chief of the village”, Hasani means “handsome” and Kidosi is a popular name in Africa.

Does anyone know how many individuals of the Malagasy giant jumping rat, aye-aye and Livingstone's fruit bat are currently kept at Bristol zoo and whether they are still being bred ?
They currently have 2.1 Aye-Aye. A young, potential breeding pair and the father of the female. The father (Noah) is now retired from the breeding programme and has his own enclosure

Are these still kept with the giant jumping rats ?
On my last visit (Jan), the Jumping rats were in with the lone male (Noah).

It seems like aye-ayes and giant jumping rats make for a great mix both biogeographically and in terms of the temperament of these two species for most zoos.
Bristol currently has 7.4 Livingstone's, and they're still breeding: most recently, a male born in May this year.
