Ueno Zoo celebrates the birth of their first elephant calf:

Ueno Zoo Celebrates 1st Birth of Elephant

Ueno Zoo has seen the first birth of a baby elephant since it opened in 1882.

Authai, a female Asian elephant at the zoo in Tokyo, gave birth to a male calf at 5:44 a.m. Saturday.

Authai, born in Thailand, was contributed to Ueno Zoo with Artid, a male Asian elephant and the father of the newborn calf, in 2002, in celebration of the birth of Princess Aiko, the daughter of Japanese Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako, in December 2001.

This is really unexpected news! It is the first calf to be born in Japan this year.:)

According to JAZA Ueno Zoo has acquired the Somali Galago (Galago gallarum). It wasn't there when I visited July 2019. Seeing as there aren't any in Europe, and most likely none in the US, anyone who visits Ueno should keep an eye out for it.

Very interesting, is this species found in more zoos in Asia?

I have no access to databases and archives besides those of Japan. If anyone here knows of any, particularly that of China (they don't use ZIMS there), please let me know.

If there are any, chances are they are in the pet trade. They probably have hybrid offspring

Giant panda lease extended until December:

Lease period for Xiang Xiang the panda at Tokyo zoo extended again due to pandemic - The Mainichi

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government announced on March 26 that China's lease of the giant panda Xiang Xiang to a zoo in the capital will be extended from the end of May to the end of December 2021.

The 3-year-old female panda was initially scheduled to be returned to China at the end of December 2020, but the lease period was extended to the end of May this year due to the spread of the coronavirus. However, as staff from both Japan and China remain unable to travel to each other's countries, officials decided to extend the lease period again.
