Best gentle / bamboo lemur enclosures and holdings / collections in zoos

The last male western lesser bamboo lemur (Hapalemur occidentalis) at Paris zoo. It rotates exhibits, sometimes rotating outside with sifakas, sometimes with red-bellied lemur in their aviary inside the greenhouse.

Both exhibits appears sufficient in size although not the size of free-contact territory that is getting more common for lemurs. Furnishing is also abundantly provided while plantings in the inside aviary do not seem to resist animal concentration.

Thank you for sharing this @Therabu ! Much appreciated !

Brilliant shot too by the way!

It is rather sad that this is the last male at the zoo, does he have mates to keep him company ?

This is an interesting one, at Wrocklaw zoo in Poland their gentle lemur shared a mixed-species exhibit with purple swamp hen and Vasa parrots. A nice biogeographically accurate mix.

If you look in this photo taken of their exhibit (which doesn't look too bad) you can see both the swamp hen and the vasa parrot but the lemurs are nowhere to be seen.

At the Cleres zoo in France they also have the Lac Alaotran gentle lemur.

A few of the enclosure which isn't spectacular but doesn't appear to be too bad at all for the lemurs.

I find the signage at the zoo for the species to be very tastefully done too, the illustration is beautiful.

Bioparque Valencia in Spain apparently have the Lac Alaotran gentle lemur too according to Zootierliste and judging by this quite old picture.

Anyone know if this information is correct and whether they are still held here?

Last I heard they had a male and two females, what happened to the two girls?

@Onychorhynchus coronatus Bristol and Wild Place both have Alaotran gentle lemurs. During my last visits to both collections they had five animals at Bristol, and three at Wild Place (this was a year ago so these numbers may have changed)
Off the top of my head, Bristol haven’t moved any of their animals to Wild Place *yet*.

Thank you for this information @ShonenJake13 !

I haven't covered the Bristol lemurs yet but I have with the Wildplace.

What was the enclosure like for the Bristol group in your opinion ?

Did you prefer it to the one at Wildplace or vice versa?

Both are equally good - they’ve had plenty of breeding results and the animals show natural behaviours in both.

That is great to hear :)

I imagine that in the past jsut like with the Livingstone's fruitbat Bristol zoo must have been one of the first zoos to receive young animals from Jersey zoo's growing population.

Yeah, a so nice group (2020 first successful breeding for Calviac) sharing the enclosure with a female Southern Black Lemur

That is excellent to hear that they have bred them this year ! :)

A little curious to know that they share this enclosure with a black lemur as I know those can be quite aggressive towards other lemur species.

Missed this one for some reason, Chessington zoo in the UK.

It is also a theme park so I don't know how I feel about that mix of zoo and theme park. I've never really been very keen on that kind of mix actually.

But they do apparently hold Lac Alaotran gentle lemurs.
