The highway connector to the zoo has finally opened. This means visitors from any of North Carolinas 3 major cities: Charlotte, Raleigh, and Greensboro will not need to use local roads to get to the zoo. No longer will a million visitors a year have to ride down a 2 lane residential street to get there.

Is this the zoo with the Parakeet Auklets, among other auks? Are they still there?

I was watching the Zoo's "Hoppy Spring!" video where the animals all dig into paper mache eggs and saw at 1:32 that the zoo apparently has a Hedgehog Tenrec. I'm assuming this animal is in the KidZone based on the enclosure it's in. Has anyone else seen or heard anything about it?

Did some digging and the funding appears to be in both the Republican (control the legislature) and Governor Cooper (a Democrats) budget. So if any budget passes the project this summer/early fall will move forward on time. As well both parties seem to be in favor of putting some funding towards the Australia project. Glad to see some political consensus on the issue. It does help that the zoo is the biggest economic driver in a fairly conservative part of the state though.

Also does anyone know what happened to the plans of bringing Okapi, Penguins, and African Wild Dogs to the zoo?

What I *would* like to see in terms of this coming to fruition (this may risk getting moved to Fantasy Zoos) would be the following:
  • Okapis getting a brand new space/barn across from the gorillas, probably something akin to Bronx' habitat.
  • Lions getting a new habitat/holding area in the Watani Grasslands Reserve, looking into the neighboring plains, with wild dogs moving into the current lion space.
  • The flamingos get moved elsewhere in the zoo, and penguins take up the former flamingo space, OR making a new Aquatics building in Junction Plaza for penguins, pyjama catsharks and other fish.

I love these ideas, and I do hope something like this happens!!
