'Big 5'

I wouldn't call Pairi Daiza world class, either!

Well that’s the thing. You wouldn’t call Pairi Daiza world class but many would, including my the vast majority of the public who visit. Let’s think about their shortcomings: their enclosures are too small and inadequate in places. Well a normal visitor wouldn’t, for example, notice that the Javan leopard exhibit is too small for two reasons. Firstly, there is a temple to one side of it, and the visitor’s mind is immediately inclined to think that if they can afford to build a temple there, the leopard exhibit must be big enough. And secondly, because there are two viewpoints into the exhibit, and so you can never see the entirety of the exhibit at once, which in turn means people assume it is larger than it is or imagine that there are other sections to it. Even if they were to realise its actual size, would they then remember it as a particularly inadequate enclosure? Probably not.

Similarly, the reptile exhibits on the Mersus Emergo are not going to be shocking to an average visitor because of the setting and excessive theming. So Pairi will, in all likelihood, get away with most of its poor exhibits.

And beyond that, what are its flaws? Many of its exhibits are excellent, some even world class to use your wording. The theming, while we know it can get in the way of animal welfare, is perceived by visitors to be adding to the exhibits rather than taking away from them. The myriad of different perspectives Pairi offers on each exhibit (particularly in Land of the Cold) will appeal to the average visitor. The species list doesn’t really matter as long as the zoo has a few big cats, apes and elephants (beyond that, only the size of the zoo is all that really matters) and Pairi undoubtedly and repeatedly leaves visitors happily stunned.

However, the only thing that raises the question of whether it should be in the big five or not is whether or not it gets enough attention to be considered as a major European zoo, and I would say it probably does given the volume of photos on social media posted there and the number of visitors every year.

(Adding the caveat that I haven’t actually been to Pairi Daiza... ;))

How about bird parks/zoos that focus on birds?

Internationally I’d say Walsrode, Jurong (soon to be at a new larger location), and Dallas World Aquarium. I still need 2 more.

There really aren't too much option here... Penang bird park and KL bird park maybe?

EDIT: Avifauna is one too

The tricky one with this is that "Big Five" does not necessarily mean the BEST FIVE :p

.

Similarly, the Big Five in Europe as a whole would possibly be:

Zoo Berlin
Prague
London
Chester
Pairi Daiza

...which again would definitely not match a European Best Five.
I would defentivily put vienna over london. I would evern put Zoos like Arnhem over London

Again, see previous post on Burgers’. The point TLD is trying to make is that the Big 5 is more based on game than on calibre or quality, so while I potentially agree with you over Vienna, London is certainly more high profile than Burgers’.

Minor point - they were the words of Penshet, not myself :p

As for Vienna, it quite possibly merits a spot among Europe's best (I had hoped to visit in 2020, but alas) but I suspect that in terms of "fame" and therefore whether it falls into the category of the "Big Five" it is probably overshadowed by the surrounding palace and gardens - I think many of the non zoo-enthusiast visitors will be people who have actually come for these, with the zoo as secondary (and possibly something they weren't all that aware of before visiting).

Hopefully I shall get there anon.

Honestly, the more I think about it, the more difficulty I have with Pairi Daiza on the Big 5 list. Sure, it attracts visitors in droves, but aside from its impressive (grotesque sometimes) constructions, there's very little to impress. With the money they've been pouring into their last few areas, you'd think they would at least have one truly great exhibit, but neither The Land of the Cold nor The Last Frontier are exceptional imo.

While I haven't been there, it does help to retain some prespective. It is one of very, very few North American complexes in Europe, split into two massive parts with a variety of species. Already that is beyond exceptional in Europe. And I wouldn't say the exhibits are exactly lousy either. Several viewing points for walrus and polar bear plus a massive underwater viewing cave, a large amur tiger exhibit plus the spacious brown bear, wolf and black bear habitats, plus a good cougar exhibit, a nice Steller's sea lion exhibit, a massive bison exhibit, moose, etc. - the list goes on. In my mind, that is an exceptional exhibit with or without the theming.

I decided to do the big 5 for ZAA zoos:
1. Pittsburgh
2. Metro Richmond
3. Wildlife world
4. Tanganyika
5. Southwick’s

I decided not to include zoos that are accredited by both AZA and ZAA. I might be biased adding Southwick’s but I think it’s a pretty good contender.

For the US as a whole, probably not Cincinnati :p...but San Diego, Bronx, Omaha definitely. The last two spots can go to an array of arguably top-tier zoos, such as Miami, Dallas, St. Louis...a hard decision...if you were to add aquariums in the mix maybe the big three could have spots (Georgia, Shedd, Monterey)?

For maybe a region I'd know a bit better, the Midwest...I'd put the 'big 5' at St. Louis, Detroit, Cincinnati, Brookfield (maybe Minnesota? Purely based off of some of their rarities), and Columbus (though including aquariums I'd replace Columbus with Shedd). Within my state, Ohio, an obvious 'big 5' list would include Cincinnati, Columbus, Cleveland, Toledo, and either Akron or The Wilds.

As I post elsewhere, I'm a native Michigander and it pains me to say anything good about Ohio, but it's possibly the top state for zoos. Cincinnati, Columbus, and in its own smaller way Toledo are excellent zoos, and Cleveland's is quite good, too. I was impressed with Akron's...not a big zoo but not pretentious and very good of its kind.

If you consider Missouri to be the Midwest I'd want to add Kansas City. I was first there around 1980 and it was very disappointing. I was there again a few years ago and they've done wonders with it.

Michigan.....but agreed with what you said there. Collection-wise I do find Cincinnati and Toledo rising above the rest, while personally I would only visit Columbus or Cleveland if I were visiting those cities (as well as Akron), nothing special that I personally would want to go out of my way to see normally. Though we also have The Wilds, which is what seems like a great experience, as well as the African Safari up somewhere.

Missouri and Kansas are part of the Midwest, yes.

Big 5 In the U.S:

1. San Diego Zoo
2. Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo
3. Disney’s Animal Kingdom
4. San Diego Zoo Safari Park
5. St. Louis Zoo

Florida is filled with both AZA and unaccredited collections. Here's my top five from FL

Brevard zoo (my favorite)
Jacksonville zoo
ZooTampa
Zoo Miami
Naples Zoo

Fell free to tell me why I am wrong
