Most exotic animals seen on the pet trade

Ah I see, so a while ago. Very rock star exit from John Aspinal there! I really need to go back to Howletts at some point (I've only been once, a decade or so ago), they've got Honey Badgers!

Better be quick before they rewild all their animals

True! Although somehow I feel that may take some time! To be honest if Damian doesn't want the zoos he inherited he can give one of them to me, I'd be happy to take it off his hands! Preferably the one with the Honey Badgers but I'm not picky!

When I was a choirboy, I wore a white surplice over a black cassock. I didn't know I was a honey badger mimic. Then it was a case of rock, ratel and roll

I'm not entirely convinced this; Копытные | www.zoo-ekzo.ru - Продажа экзотических животных Russian site isn't a scam (fake exotic animal scams seem to be increasingly popular these days I've noticed). But if it is genuine they've got everything from hamsters to hippos available. Some things are shockingly cheap; wolves for a £100 or bears for £500 anyone? Whereas an elephant is a reassuringly expensive £70k.
There are a couple of things that are almost entirely absent from European zoos, for example this banded linsang; Полосатый линзанг | www.zoo-ekzo.ru - Продажа экзотических животных (unsuitable for even a country house remember guys) or perhaps you'd prefer a marbled cat Мраморная кошка | www.zoo-ekzo.ru - Продажа экзотических животных.
Perhaps any Russian Zoochatters are able to verify if this is a scam or genuine? Either way I'm fascinated by the whole phenomena tbh.

All of their images are stolen, so I'm going to go with scam. Or a cover.
Just saw the cheetah... I highly doubt they have cheetahs to sell.

I also lean heavily towards scam. As somebody commented earlier though it's a remarkably elaborate and professional looking scam. I somehow doubt they have koalas to sell!

My favourite thing about it is that the ONLY species described as "only for zoos" are koalas. Like, that's where they draw the line! However they contradict that if you click on the koala listing it says "If you are able to provide a regular supply of at least 1 kg per day of the freshest eucalyptus leaves of a specific species, you can try to keep the koala at home!"
And remember kids;
"Keep in mind that in Russia eucalyptus trees grow only in the Sochi region and the species of these eucalyptus trees is not suitable for koalas."
Sound advice for all home koala keepers I'm sure we can all agree!

I just find sites like these fascinating as a concept. Like who came up with this? And went to the trouble of compiling such an extensive list of species, some ordinary, some spectacularly exotic, complete with detailed info on many of the species and home care tips? It makes Nigerian prince scams look childishly amateur!

The man behind this site is named Victor Saveliev, from Volgograd. He has only common herps & invertebrates in stock. With other animals, he makes contact with dealers/breeders after deposit is made. Such species as marbled cats and apes are most likely smuggled.
Wolves & bears are really cheap in Russia (for non-Russians), they're bred in almost every zoo and by many private keepers, and cubs are often caught in the wild, but with recent dangerous animals law these species are banned (animals bought before law can be kept though).

There is a company in Russia named Afro Zoo that imports African animals, and cheetahs too.
However, not all those animals are legal. I read a lawsuit (not related to smuggling) that they imported chimpanzees for circus from Guinea, where are no ape breeding centers. Animals said to be originating from Animals Park Ltd (obviously fake name).

Thank you for clearing up this mystery! Very informative! If you can shed anymore light on this I'd be interested.

The cheetahs would be illegal.

Even captive-bred ones?
Chelyabinsk zoo bought cheetahs from AfroZoo, and Ekaterinburg zoo bought wild-caught aardvarks.

I think @TinoPup went a bit too fast there. Cheetahs are listed under CITES annex I, so exporting wild-caught animals is most of the time illegal. Namibia has a reservation towards this listing since 1991. When looking at the exports of Cheetah from Africa to Russia the last 10 years quite a number pops up. Most animals coming from South Africa and being labeled as captive bred. This seems to be genuine looking at the conditions in South Africa. Also some animals came from Namibia but again these are labeled as captive bred so again nothing seems out of order. All in all looking into the data I see no reason to assume the import of cheetahs to Russia was illegal. Aardvarks are not listed under CITES so wild-caught animals can be exported and imported freely if in line with national legislation.

If they were going to a legit zoo, that's fine. But if they were going for the pet trade like that website seems to be, that's illegal.

Some more info about Saveliev. In winter 2019/2020 he captured lots of common noctules in Volgograd after a hibernating colony was thrown out by workers (most Russians hate bats despite many species are protected). One of the rehabbers who rescued the rest of animals seen bats offered for sale in Saveliev's group in VK social network and at classified ad site Avito, the next day after the accident. After being questioned about animals' origin Saveliev quickly deleted the ads, the fate of bats remain unknown. They most likely perished.
Also one woman bought 2 Kuhl's pipistrelles from him, being told they're captive bred noctules. One specimen died and other was handed over to rehab center.
