Edinburgh Zoo Edinburgh Zoo News 2021

Do we actually know this or is it just speculation? I have no view on this, just curious.

One part informed speculation, one part odds and ends shared with me via personal communication over the years indicating that they would have gone into the red *already* had they not a) saved money by getting rid of a sizable chunk of the collection and hence reduced the overall expenditure on food and exhibit maintenance and b) had a boom in visitor income as a result of the baby polar bear up at Highland Wildlife Park.

Due to the new Covid Restrictions in Scotland coming into effect tomorrow, Edinburgh Zoo will be closed from tomorrow until further notice:

Something I don’t understand - and I’m not advocating any particular position - is why they wanted to keep them longer and if the pandas have been such a financial disaster, how have they financed things like the new tiger enclosure and the giraffe project?

Obviously I’m thinking of things from the perspective of the situation prior to Covid and the UK government inflicted Brexit damage.

Without drilling down into the business side of things, there are a variety of ways an organisation can invest even if they're not making much money -loans, grants, donations. As I remember it Edinburgh fairly recently received a significant chunk of money as compensation for building work disturbing their pandas.

As far as I know they didn't receive a "chunk of money". The site close to the former Panda house was owned by the NHS. The NHS agreed to sell the site to a developer, RZSS opposed the developers plans on the grounds of the Panda's welfare being affected by the development. The planning application was taken to the Scottish Government who agreed that the Panda's welfare was likely to be affected negatively by the development. The Scottish Government then stepped in to provide funding for the new Panda Enclosure, although the initial funding provided was approx. £500k short of the total bill and RZSS have went back to the government to ask them to meet the full cost. I'm unsure on the outcome of this, or if there has even been an outcome yet. Incidentally, the NHS received the full amount from the agreed sale value of the site to the developer, just in case anyone thought funds may have been diverted from the NHS to the Panda's.

Is anyone else watching 'Inside the Zoo' on BBC2? It started last night, with the second episode on tonight at 7pm, and then the third on Friday. I gather its already been shown on BBC Scotland but this is it premiere in the rest of the UK. First episode was pretty good I thought!

Yes I watched it but I am sure I have seen it before. But will watch it again anyway.

All the episodes are on iPlayer. Looks like i've watched the first three, but can not remember when. Thanks for reminding me; now I can finish the rest
