Detroit Zoo Detroit Zoo News 2021

Very unfortunate news regarding the polar bear incident.

Also, if Detroit ends up phasing out seals (which honestly is possible), then it'd be yet another ridiculous move in their list of already ridiculous moves. What would they even replace the seals with????
Perhaps some sort of arctic diving seabird? Like maybe a puffin or an eider?

Quick question for Detroit regulars: anybody know what lives in this enclosure now and what part of the zoo it's in? It was formerly home to lion-tailed macaques.

Is it possible that due to her age (20 years), she’d ceased cycling? She hadn’t bred for three seasons with her last mate.

At Auckland Zoo, Lisbeth produced several cubs up until the age of 19; while Ingrid, who joined the zoo aged 21, never bred.

I believe Crystal at the Toledo Zoo was 19 or 20 when she had her last cub, so I think it's possible, but it's just getting there with time running out. I think because Anana had not had a cub since 2012, it was almost a sign she did not want one/could not have one again. However, I know with polar bears being so scarce in US zoos now and her valuable bloodline, they tried to see if they could get lucky again. It's just very unfortunate her life had to end this way. I imagined she would retire at the Detroit Zoo and that she had at least a few years left.

A docent told me the species coming into the former seal exhibit, however I cannot say what it is until the zoo releases that information. All I can say is it will be an aquatic mammal.
