Los Angeles Zoo & Botanical Gardens Los Angeles Zoo News 2021

The zoo will be holding a virtual meeting on Wednesday to hear about public concerns or questions about the zoos redesign and environmental impact. Here is the link to the meeting at 5:30 PM pacific time. I won't be able to attend the first 30 minutes so if someone could recap that would be great.

Ok so how many hippos did or does the zoo have now because I thought they only had the mother and daughter or is there another because I would assume the daughter is too young?

Yes, the zoo previously had a mother-daughter pair. The daughter was born in 2014, so she's not too young to be transferred; female hippos start becoming reproductive around three or four years of age.

Anyone been to the meeting and anything to report?

In the latest Zooscape magazine, they confirm that their last Komodo Dragon, Buru, passed. It’s in the January animal transaction minutes but I don’t think it had been mentioned yet :/ It looks like they will continue to work with the specie this year from what the article alludes to.

Sorry to ask again but does anyone know whether Rosie or Mara was the hippo they sent to Disney?

I’ve visited the zoo twice in a week, just wanted to make a mini update for anyone considering making a lengthy trip down here:

*COVID restrictions are still very present with even a section of the Australasia area being cut off. Primarily access to the dual Southern Cassowary exhibits.
*Indoor exhibits, aviary, harpy Eagle exhibit, roundhouses are restricted. You can still access tomistomas and Indian gharials near the LAIR.
*Minor construction going between mountain tapir exhibit and roundhouse with primates in South America section.
*Angela the gorilla infant has been exploring her home more with Kelley still keeping an eye on her and mom.
*Sarus Crane chick out with parents in Elephants of Asia exhibit.
*Giant Anteater seems to have occupied former Giant River Otter exhibit.
*Brazilian Ocelot has been relocated across from Serval. Their primary exhibit seemed to need a fixture with mini waterfall.
*Proper signage for Fringe Tree Frogs posted by terrarium in Rainforest of the Americas.
*Both hippopotamuses are still present at the zoo and yet to know which is to be transferred out for SSP program.
*Tickets for mornings have been sold out and they tend to sell out as off noon, can be bought on their website.
*Speaking of their website, it underwent a needed upgraded and certainly feels more welcoming for zoo visitors.

I hope this helps anyone and I’ll try to visit weekly if possible! :)

I was looking at the map and it had what appeared to be hornbills in the netted exhibit in the Australian section. It used to hold a group of wallabies that was, from my understanding, unsuccessful. Can you confirm this during one of your visits?

The large netted exhibit contains both Yellow Footed Rock Wallabies and Rhinoceros Hornbills. I only saw one wallaby and two hornbills so far due to the cut off access to the cassowary that also cuts out visibility to about 1/2 of the netted exhibit.
