Port Lympne Wild Animal Park Port Lympne Wild Animal Park news 2021

I would imagine they will be housed in the now empty tiger enclosure down the bottom?
I guess so. I am not sure how many existing Lions they still have at Port Lympne (anyone?), apart from the current breeding pair and their cubs. I guess their parents/relatives that used to live in the enclosures at the bottom of the park are mostly dead now? -apart from the one remaining female at Howletts. Two prospective and seperate new groups (from Borth and Europe) would give them more like the numbers they had previously.

ha story time- Milo, the breeding male, has 7 siblings to the best of my knowledge they are all alive, his mother is 21 and still on site. He has plenty uncles/ aunts from kabir’s time a longleat. As for the lioness, she came from a zoo in denmark - they allow their animals to breed and cull sub adults- as a result at least 13 of her sibling were euthanised. She arrived with a sister but she was killed by milo and lilly ( the breeding female). Port lympne have 7 lions atm including the cub though the survival of this individual is not certain. Howletts have just one lioness

I believe Zulu is vasectomised so breeding will not be a concern. I will find it very unlikely that the pair will be split either given their history and their circumstances so I believe it is most likely that they will both live out their days together. It has been mooted before that Howletts & PL will turn into rescue centres. This and the announcement of lion and bear rescue late last year only points further in this direction. After all now they are not EAZA EEP species will not be able to be acquired for future development.

I am sure that's the intention, for them just to live out their days there as a pair. And any more that come from France(was it?) will form an additional seperate group too. So potentially 4 enclosures with lions, while the old female is still alive.

Is that Saffira( or was it Saffaya)? So she is the only other Lion at PL at present apart from the family group?

Yes that's correct. If you have access to Facebook and scroll back to 10th August 2020 then they give a detailed breakdown of each lion and their dob. There are 7 currently.

Where abouts is the other lion kept? Is she down by the hunting dogs where only the overnight experience guests can go?

Must be as that is where they used to be. Effectively offshow. I presume the new Lions may also go into other enclosures in that area, depends what they have, or can make, empty, unless they build additionally. The ones coming from France are three males rescued from either one, or two circuses.

I hadn't realised Lily/Oudrika is a generic Lioness- so with that pairing they seem to have given up any suggestion of breeding 'Barbary' Lions anymore. Just 'lions' now.

What is Oudrika's(Lily) breeding? Wasn't she brought in from abroad, I just persumed that she was a pure bred?

On their FB page mentioned above, they describe her as a 'sub-saharan' lion, and she came from Denmark. So definately not a supposedly Barbary. The Lions they still have left from their original breeding would be; the old female Saffaya, her son Milo( the father of the cubs) and the other older lioness at Howletts.

.....which does rather sound as though they’ve given up breeding Lions.

Despite the recent cubs, I think they have probably dropped the pretence of breeding Barbaries now. The whole ethos of these parks seems to be gradually changing at present.

I am afraid "changing" is diplomacy for "going down hill".

What bugs me is the rationale / philosophy disband-rewild which is not a vision, but a policy goal. It should be part and parcel for the zoos to operate ex situ captive breeding, participate in global programs in and ex situ and where possible provide stock for rewilding and support ecosystem, species and habitat conservation in situ.

BTW: Under the old management, I was a firm supporter of the parks and found their siting and holding large breeding groups a hall mark for future of larger zoos, now I am no longer so sure. For one, it is wrong to put all eggs in the basket on the wilderness ..., which by all accounts including its biodiversity is as yet shrinking despite CoVid lockdown, even worse now with no effective protection in place ..., so it ain't an end game nor solution for the facilities.

An update on justgiving page has announced that the 3:0 lions can no longer move to PL due to having tested positive for Feline Calicivirus (FCV).

@Embu what will happen to the Lions now will they be Euthanised? If the Lions are Euthanised it will be a tragic fate, for otherwise healthy animals. I only ask about Euthanasia as I know that two of the Asiatic Lioness at Paignton Zoo,namely Maliya and Indu suffered this outcome after testing positive for Bovine Tuberculoses (TB).

Is Zulu the Male African Lion that was going to move to Port Lyme, the same Lion that was born at Linton Zoo? If it is the same Zulu he later moved to Noah’s Ark Zoo Farm near Bristol with his litter mates? Following residing at Noah’s Ark for a few years Zulu and his newly matched Mate relocated to I presume Borth Animalarium.I could be talking about a completely different Lion so please accept my apology if this is the case.

These the Borth lions or others?

In my opinion, Port Lympne nor Howletts are anything like a rescue facility for animal rescue rehousing. It is a serious conservation facility with a vision and mission to conserve, educate and good zoo management.
