ZooChat Challenge Europe 2021

It's OK. I just really wanted to take part, is all. But I must reassure you, it wasn't anything illegal...I do legit work there and we've been trying to get the zoo up and running again for when we can officially reopen...something made harder due to all this snow.

I'll post the list again once the zoo officially reopens. I doubt it'll have changed, though.

It’s not a problem, I’m glad to have a new face in the challenge! Just trying to be as equal to everyone as we possibly can :)

Here's to enjoying the lead for a little while... Even with seven no-shows (some of them expected), my home zoo proves to be a points machine once again. I put species in italics where I've seen new subspecies/forms in case I'm not up to speed with ungulate taxonomy.

I shouldn't really be helping someone with such a substantial lead ;) but if you saw both giraffes at the Zoo then that's two ticks as for this challenge I am counting the proposed split of giraffe into four species. Given that the Zoo has a male reticulated and a male Rothschild's, that is therefore two ticks (Giraffa reticulata and Giraffa camelopardalis)

ZTL lists both of them as hybrids, I but can confirm that they do look very different from each other. I'm confident that I'll get a "pure" Rothschild very soon, so I'll count that there and replace the animal of unclear ancesty. Same with Reticulated (if I get there which is not clear yet).

In that case, just to be on the safe side and to conform with the rules (in which I said any pure forms of the giraffe species count, but the hybrids don’t), I won’t count your current giraffe tick. So you’re on 47 at the moment :)

While I don't agree with that way of counting (It's weird to count domestics with maybe really wild ancestry, but not hybrids that may actually be the same species), so be it. I can't edit my post right now, not sure why, but I'll take it into account for my next update.

You must be desperate to win, since there will be virtually no cross channel movement this year you have probably almost won already!!
This challenge is probably pointless for anyone in the UK. But we can treat it as another UK challenge

Well, it’s a late start and a small zoo, but a start nonetheless.

I'm not sure about that. As things stand here It's improbable that I will be visiting any other zoo than the Berlin's in 2021. In fact, Tierpark is the farthest I've been from my home since January. This would put me at 86 if I get all the no-shows left. Is it really impossible to beat that number within the whole UK?

I apologize if I've made things seem hopeless for others, but in my opinion a ungulate challenge winner should at least be able to beat the tally of Europe's best ungulate city;)

Please don't take offence, I was only commenting because you felt the need to add the 2 extra when already so far ahead. I visit between 40 and 55 UK zoos a year usually and am pretty confident you have already beaten me!

Question - do zoos count if they're open to members?

Yes, that would still count as open to the public in my eyes.

And now for a housekeeping post:

Please don't take offence, I was only commenting because you felt the need to add the 2 extra when already so far ahead. I visit between 40 and 55 UK zoos a year usually and am pretty confident you have already beaten me!

Let’s see how this year goes...last year was already such a massive change from what we’d all expected. I’d rather that we don’t all get too negative (whether accidentally or deliberately!) with other participants that have more of an opportunity than some of us. In previous years I’ve been based in the UK and still managed to get around a fair bit even with the little income/spare time I possess, and we’ve had winners before in the past who have only travelled to a handful of countries in their area. Last year’s winner got lucky with the places he could visit during a pandemic, and for the second European challenge which was both waterfowl and gamebirds I visited Walsrode, Slimbridge and Cologne that year solely by chance, which ended up getting me the victory.

I understand the comment wasn’t meant to offend anyone, and I’m not saying you have offended me personally nor am I speaking for our German friend, but let’s please leave any bemoaning of the opportunities other folks get from the spirit of the game. As I said in the very first post in this thread, the main aim with the theme this year is to allow people to actually partake as last year’s theme was mostly indoors. There’s still plenty of spots in the UK that could get you a fair number, and it’s not looking like anyone will be able to leave their native countries much at the moment...so let’s wait and see what this year brings!

In short...this challenge isn’t to win but is more for fun!

Thanks all, looking forward to seeing what everyone (UK or rest of Europe) bring to this challenge! Annoying housekeeping over :)

(I for one am very excited to add my whopping four additions to my total this weekend)
