Is anyone else watching 'Inside the Zoo' on BBC2? It started last night, with the second episode on tonight at 7pm, and then the third on Friday. I gather its already been shown on BBC Scotland but this is it premiere in the rest of the UK. First episode was pretty good I thought!

I'm enjoying it, especially now that visiting zoos seems almost mythical.

Can't resist mentioning that the design of the Gorilla/Orangutan house- later renovated for the Pandas, was quite the worst for its time I have seen anywhere- particularly as far as public viewing was concerned.

I remember seeing Chinese Ghoral (?), Cock of the Rock, Cloud Rats & Drill - all firsts for me at the time.

Ratel, Wolverine, Drill, Polar Bear, Chinese Goral, Koala, Bush Dog, Gelada, North American Tree Porcupine, Pallas Cat, Sun Bear, Egyptian Vulture & Steller's Sea Eagle were all firsts for me when I visited when I was younger. Edinburgh used to have such a great treasure trove of unique species, mostly gone now unfortunately

I’ve been watching the webcams recently and the penguins have been collecting stones for their nests, haven’t seen any eggs as of yet though.

A Koala joey has emerged from his mother’s pouch:

The male joey has been named ‘Dameeli’ and was born in June to first time parents, Tanami and Kalari.

Yeah, several years ago now - moved the Barbary Macaque group into the exhibit, before subsequently scrapping that species too. The exhibit now contains L'Hoest Guenon.

They were always one of the highlights at the zoo, along with all the other interesting animals they used to have.

The only bonus really is for the L'hoests monkey, at least they escaped the awful monkey house!
