Hello,
I'm looking at which zoos still have black cats on show. Lucky enough to be a member at Chester so very familiar with Goshi.

I believe that lincolnshire have a leopard however not on show.

Did Drayton have any?

Hello,

New here...
I'm looking for panthers in the UK. Fortunate enough to live by and be a member at Chester so very familiar with Goshi.

I feel I've seen one in Drayton but was pre my keen animal interest (particularly big cats) but I could of made that up.

Any others?

Drayton Manor did, think they're gone now though. Exmoor have black leopards, and I think WHF have a Jaguar but they're not really open to the public, except for photography days that cost a small fortune.

If you're looking for panthers then good luck! There aren't any in the UK or anywhere else in the world. If by 'panthers' you mean melanistic big cats then I think you have a much better chance of seeing them. There's Goshi at Chester and I believe that the Big Cat Sanctuary have a number of melanistic jaguars. You're right Drayton Manor did have leopards but they have since moved elsewhere. Their enclosure is now used for red panda. I hope this information is of use.

Exmoor Zoo have a male black Leopard, and I believe Heythrop also have a fairly young-ish black Leopard.

Apologies, I'm new here and not a big forum user anywhere so I'm not up to speed with etiquette etc.

I'm mainly looking at UK however I'm always happy to hear about other zoos.

It's more a curiosity so all "black cats."

I'm confused by this comment. 'Panther' is used as an alternative name for leopards and pumas. It is a long time since leopards and panthers were considered to be separate species.

Ok. The reason I asked is because this is posted under General Zoo Discussion, which would imply zoos worldwide. If you want to focus specifically on UK you would post it under United Kingdom instead. This is not a critique, just helping you learn how to navigate the forum. Since you are interested in other zoos as well, we can leave it as is. I will make a followup post with some tips.

I am not sure if you are old enough to travel on your own or, if not, if you have a passport and ever visit other countries with your parents. But if so your best bet is to take the Eurostar to Paris and then head down to Le Parc Des Felins (about an hour east I think). They have the most number of species and subspecies of cats of any zoo in the world, all in huge natural enclosures. I am a cat fanatic and it is by far my favorite zoo. They have one large enclosure just for black leopards. Another is for jungle cats and on my last visit (a few years ago) they did have a black jungle cat in with the regular ones. The jaguars were normal colored on all my visits but I think I saw online they now have a black one as well?

Australasian Melanistic Felids

There is now only one melanistic felid in the entire Australasian region - a melanistic (generic) leopard that lives at Kamo Wildlife Sanctuary in New Zealand:

Prior to this, Auckland Zoo imported black leopard cubs from the Chicago Zoo in 1968 (which had descendants until the 1990’s); and Taronga Zoo and Adelaide Zoo imported a pair of melanistic Jaguar siblings in 1979. The male Jaguar at Taronga Zoo (Ali) lived until 1996 and sired two cubs (both melanistic) in 1984 and 1987. The youngest son (Maya) died at Melbourne Zoo in 2008 and was the last melanistic felid in Australia.

They were originally two separate threads, one in General and one in UK, but got merged.

(Nathalie - We're a small enough forum that a lot of people read things all over :) I use the "recent posts" tab, for example, rather than clicking on forums themselves. Welcome!)
