Chester Zoo Chester Zoo News 2021

I always thought the COO reported into the CEO and was the second in command that essentially is there to make the CEO's vision a reality.
Yes, I wondered if all the 'E's and 'O's' could be where the origin of the story lies?
In the old days we used titles like 'Director', 'Curator' and 'Head Keeper'...:)
Have the lumpers, splitters and re-namers been busy again...?

It's the 'C-Suite':
Chief Executive Officer = Talker
Chief Operating Officer = Doer
Chief Financial Officer = Counter
Chief Technology Officer = Thinker
Chief Information Officer = Knower
Chief Marketing Officer = Bragger

I believe that this is the first time in the zoos history (nearly 90 years) that it has not been led by someone with an animal background.

A trend that has been seen in many of the larger zoos in recent years.

Not a trend to be applauded, I hold a dim view on bizniz people running the show in a zoo facility.
Local examples in Netherlands: Rotterdam Zoo (the new man, mmmm ... I need a b-u-c-k-e-t), Emmen Noorderdierenpark (now thankfully rectified, new director, realising a zoo is not a kids play area ...).

It's just struck me that the zoo will celebrate its 90th anniversary this year - next month I believe? A pity that it probably won't be marked particularly given the circumstances.

Looking forward to its centenary though! :)

At Hamerton it was our 30th last June - postponed (!) for similar reasons...

Does anyone know when the giraffe calf was born? The zoos website says early March and news outlets all have dates ranging from the 3rd to the 10th of March.

Also, is it possible that Tula has been retired from breeding? She was in one of the recent livestreams and it just seems strange that she has not produced a calf since Murchison in 2016, I am aware that she suffered a stillbirth in 2015 which could potentially be a reason not to breed her again, however Dagmar also gave birth to a calf which lived only two days in 2017 and went on to produce Mburo two years later. Meru also seems to prefer Orla and Dagmar and they have produced calves every two years or so. Millie and Kanzi should also be old enough to breed now also, but it is also possible that Meru does not show interest in them.

Tula isn't yet 11yrs so I doubt she will have been retired unless she's overepresented or isn't a good mother. It could be that Tula, Millie & Kanzi could be on contraceptives and restricted as recommended by the studbook.

The calf was born on the third of March.

Semuliki moved to Zoo Antwerpen in September 2020. The other female, Ada arrived from ZSL London.

Ah, thank you, any idea when she arrived from London? Also, any information on when she was born and to who? As far as I can tell the most recent female they could have moved was 'Meghan' born to Oni and Mbuti on 9th December 2018 unless her name was changed.

‘Meghan’ (born 09/12/17) is otherwise known as Ada. I think Ada arrived in 2019, might be worth looking at Chester’s annual reports to see when she arrived. Mbuti is AFAIK still at ZSL London since arriving on 10/06/09.

@Pertinax wasn’t Mbuti born at Bristol Zoo in 2005. I believe his Dad is called N’dura. If I remember rightly Mbut and his parents resided in what is now the Gorilla House.
Mbuti was I think born at Bristol. What I do know is that I tracked his ancestry and he was the seventh generation descended directly from the original Okapis at Bristol Zoo,( Bakeda x Mazanga, though not all subsequent generations were born at Bristol Zoo) so an offspring from him would be an eighth generation descendant.

Whipsnade is also 90 in May!

@Pertinax I have this knowledge about Mbuti as I have the 2005 ITV documentary series of The Zoo on DVD. @Pertinax I would highly recommend that if possible you purchase the DVD of The Zoo,it’s a great series and highly educational about Bristol Zoo.
