Master thesis ape exhibits

According to the keepers, the "animals stay inside between the 1st of November and the 1st of April, to avoid daily discussions if it is warm enough to let the animals outside".

That is interesting, so they aren't allowed outside for 5 months of the year? Seems rather draconian...

Maybe it has been changed by now (I was there 10 years ago), but I am not sure. And as temperature in the inside enclosure was some 25 degrees Celcius (while we are used to 17 degrees C in many European zoos), differences between inside and outside were always high, which is not motivating the animals to go outside.

I visited Bronx once many years ago- when they still had the old Ape House. It was March I think- it was clear the apes had not been outside for a long time as the outdoor enclosures were full of leaves and generally unused-looking. So maybe it has always been a policy there.

Does anyone know an ape exhibit - for example in a tropical country - where the animals don't have access to an indoor area?

I highly doubt you'll find an exhibit like this. Indoor areas are often required for inclement weather, when keepers access the exhibit, and to separate individuals.
