Greensboro Science Center Greensboro Science Center: News & Expansion Updates

I am more interested in small cats than big cats (not because I like one more than the other, but because they are much more rare in captivity).

The NC Zoo has Sand Cat, Bobcat & Ocelot (along with cougar and lion). Its only 40 mins south of the Greensboro Science Center. In a year or so that would mean their would be a nice variety of small cats between them.

I knew about the relatively new ocelot exhibit, but I had no idea they have sand cats! North Carolina here I come (assuming the Greensboro small cat project comes to fruition).

A few updates from my visit this week:
  • Construction has started on Revolution Ridge finally. Lots of site clearing has been done, mostly of forested areas although the wallaby exhibit has been demolished. The creek that runs through the middle of the site and its tree cover have been retained though. The complex will open in 2021.
  • A kookaburra exhibit will be included in Revolution Ridge.
  • The outdoor komodo dragon exhibit is looking great. Appears to be almost done. I imagine it will be open by May.
  • Lastly, I just want to applaud the zoos focus on enrichment. I have never seen a zoo that focuses more on it in my opinion.

If they are building an outdoor fishing cat habitat, what will happen to the indoor fishing cat habitat in the aquarium?

Revolution Ridge is slated to open in May 2021. The only two exhibits specifically mentioned in this link are fishing cat and pygmy hippo. (There is also a photo of the indoor pygmy hippo section on their Facebook page). Does anyone know if the other exhibits like okapi will open as well?

The species list off the top of my head is:
  • Okapi
  • Pygmy Hippo
  • Red Panda
  • Kookaburra (unsure if they made the cut)
  • Cassowary
  • Chilean flamingo
  • Serval
  • Sand Cat
  • Black-footed cat
The okapi exhibit last I heard was completed. The pygmy hippo indoor exhibit and the outdoor cat exhibits were the main areas needing to be completed.

They haven't said yet. The center actually has 2 fishing cat exhibits right now. The breeding pair are indoors at the aquarium and an older kitten has been moved to the former coati exhibit across from the barn.

Before I clicked on ZooChat I found the video posted above and was about to post it myself. It looks like everything will be open by mid May.

1.1 Pygmy Hippo and 1.0 Okapi have arrived at Greensboro. They all came from Florida (hippos from Zoo Tampa and Zoo Miami and okapi from DAK): Log into Facebook | Facebook

Very exciting. The zoo is hoping the pair of pygmy hippos will breed. They will likely be a bachelor institution for okapi at least starting out though. Which seems to be the policy of the SSP. They already have kookaburra (just mentioned) and cassowary (for 2 years) off display. So now they just need to get the small cats and flamingos :D And then whatever species are replacing the fishing cats and red pandas.

I am sure you already know, but in case you don't GSC did recieve a male kookaburra named Burt

Seems to be a repurposing of the old wallaby holding building. The aviary looks real nice and they do mention bringing in additional species to mix. Given the state of the centers bird collection (like 5 species on exhibit), everything helps.

Of the two Sumatran Tigers that lived at Greenboro, can any regular visitors let me know whether it was Rocky or Jaggar that was sent to Nashville (as they've renamed him 'Felix')? Many thanks!
