Brookfield Zoo Brookfield Zoo News 2021

A new Mexican gray wolf has joined the pack. No information known besides that he is presumably male. Meanwhile, the three-legged female has been renamed Vivillette.

As of the time of this post...

- Tropic World
- Habitat Africa's indoor exhibits
- Wolf Woods indoor viewing gallery
- Australia House
- Hamill Family Play Zoo
- Hamill Family Wild Encounters (should open next month... from what I believe)
- The Living Coast
- Bird/Reptile Houses
- Clouded Leopard Rainforest/Desert's Edge

Are all closed.

Are these all closed for the foreseeable future? I'm planning a trip and Brookfield is high on my list of stops, but if that much is closed, I'll hold off!

My list of key species to see: Small-spotted genet, red-flanked duiker, tree pangolin, gerenuk, wombat, caracal, dolphin, wild dog, bfc. First 3 would be new to me, and I haven't seen a gerenuk in decades.

Brookfield no longer has Caracal in their collection. I believe that the old Caracal exhibit now holds Ocelot

What's the story behind the three-legged wolf?

Of these animals listed, the only ones you're going to see at the moment are the dolphins for sure.

Red-Flanked Duiker, Gerenuk and African Wild Dogs I think are weather-dependent. I know on their Facebook livestream, Brookfield showed they do have some Habitat Africa: The Forest animals with outside access (I know the okapis have outdoor access as of now, however, my last visit they elected to stay inside.) Think the Red-Flanked Duiker's going to remain indoors for now until we keep consistent high temps (maybe starting this week?) I believe this would apply to the Gerenuk and the Wild Dogs as well. During my visit last Thursday or so, even the giraffes still didn't have outdoor access.

I'll definitely hold off then, thanks. Maybe I need to do a summer trip to there and Columbus, since I missed the duikers at Columbus because of weather, as well :D

Don’t make plans to visit Columbus solely for duiker as they no longer have them.

 Really regretting not doing the okapi tour last autumn, now! I didn't find out duiker was included on it until I was home the next day.

Oh no! That is very unfortunate. If you really want to see black duiker, I would make my way to Los Angeles, Miami, or San Diego as soon as possible. There are only eight animals left-- they won't be around for much longer.

With the pandemic, those aren't really an option right now :( Miami is a distant potential, but it's still a two-day drive and one I'm not doing soon. It's very high on my list, though, largely because of their duiker collection.

Made a visit to the zoo earlier today. Not enough notable for a full on visit report but regardless a few tidbits.

  • There was a 20 minute wait to get into the Living Coast, but it was worth it to see the building again. I forgot what a gem it is. The new sea turtle was cool, always nice to see new additions. I didn't have time to make it to The Swamp, but theres always next time.
  • No sign of the crowned crane that arrived last December, literally, there were no signs indicating it was there. The nyala were also off exhibit and there was only red river hog. Any idea whats going on here?
  • The polar bears were together and were fun to watch. I am cautiously optimistic for cubs this time around.

Braved the rain for a visit today. The nyala (three now, rather than the two I saw each time last year... more on this in a bit by the way) are back out, but strangely the red river hogs in either the shared exhibit in the Habitat Africa: Savannah or their outdoor Habitat Africa: Forest exhibit were indoors for the day. Probably the rain. Speaking of Habitat Africa, the okapi were outdoors today, the giraffes were all inside, the painted dogs were outside, and all of the duikers were inside.

Got to check out the new sea turtle as well for the first time and it made me realize some of the tanks in The Living Coast really could use some theming. A dreary painted tank w/no underwater foliage or rocks of any sort is rather depressing to house a new species with a bit of hype to it.

Polar bears were great to see together. Hudson and Hope weren't really doing much together, just sitting about the enclosure minding their own business.

----

Anyways, so some expanded notes on the nyala. The outdoor path for Habitat Africa: The Forest has a sign up for a female nyala calf born late-2020 up in front of the red river hogs's (empty) yard. Thought that was a weird placement for the sign given I've only even seen hogs in there. It does explain that third nyala in the Savannah shared yard though as it was about 3/4ths the height of the other two in the yard.

Perhaps some yard switching is coming up soon? I would think that the existing red river hog yard's a bit small for a larger antelope species, but it is a quieter space for what is a more timid animal.

Zoo's need everyone's support through this crisis but do it with respect. Wear your mask keep your distance and by all means enjoy the wildlife and the outdoors.
