15. Kangaroo Rat - Dipodomys (did not check which species. It may not have even been signed)

ASDM's website says Merriam's Kangaroo Rat (D. merriami) so we'll go with that.

11. White-tailed Deer - Odocoileus virginianus (signed as White-tailed Deer but they looked more like Mule Deer to me. Website says both depending on the page :confused:)

Back in 2018 they had both species of deer in the enclosure: Mule and Coue's White-tailed. Might be able to ID what you saw from photos if you have any. You remember how many you saw?

Also no Coati, Gray Fox, Black Bear or additional rodents at ASDM?

Realized I didn't italicize and bold my first list, so I'll redo here:

Point Defiance Zoo
1. Virginia Opossum (Didelphis virginiana)
2. Harbor Seal (Phoca vitulina)
3. California Sea Lion (Zalophus californianus)
4. Sea Otter (Enhydra lutris)

5. Polar Bear (Ursus maritimus)
6. Arctic Fox (Vulpes lagopus)
7. Muskox (Ovibos moschatus)

I saw two. Both were in bad spots for photos but I saw the rear end of one which is why I thought mule deer. Gray fox, grasshopper mouse, and black bear were no shows. No more coati. Signs were scratched out and they are no longer on the map. Sad because they were also a no show at Phoenix.

Ah, okay. When you said we could count one subspecies per species, I was thinking that I generic ones could be counted, too.

When you said we could count one subspecies per species, I was thinking that I generic ones could be counted, too.

For clarification, this is the rule:

8. Only one subspecies per species can be counted. If you do not see a pure subspecies, it is still okay to count the species. Refer to the accepted taxonomy for any subspecies questions or elevations.

"Only one subspecies per species can be counted" is just another way of saying that you can only count a species once. "If you do not see a pure subspecies, it is still okay to count the species" means that you don't need to see a pure subspecies in order to count the species; it doesn't mean you can count a species twice if you see both subspecific and generic.

Quarterly update: we're three months into the year. We already have 15 participants (a new record for the North American version, I believe) and so far 61 species have been recorded collectively by everyone. Here are the current standings:

@red river hog: 25
@Echobeast: 19
@Ituri @birdsandbats: 16
@TinoPup @Kudu21: 15
@Westcoastperson: 13
@ThylacineAlive: 12
@Mai Thai: 10
@Hipporex: 9
@jayjds2 @Coelacanth18: 8
@Dhole dude: 7
@nczoofan: 5
@Neil chace: 1

I'm tagging everyone currently participating in case any of you have updates not yet posted or need to correct your stats. If we can keep on top of those, it'll save time and hassle at the end as well as keep the thread active. Otherwise, keep up the good work; hopefully with both springtime and vaccines rolling out the zoo trips will begin in earnest!
