Nothing posted for Hamerton this year?!

Bactrian camel born a week ago .... but I'm sure there might be a couple more points for discussion we haven't heard about.

Not too much animal news. Many arrivals and departures in the pipeline, but held up by a mixture of Brexit, Covid and VERY slow/difficult Governments... Winter/spring babies stating to arrive, yes a camel, plus lemurs, tamarins, vulture, owl, bettongs, possums etc
We've been manically busy with some major non-animal work, much of which would have been very slow if done when open to visitors - progressing two new developments, one due for the summer and one for later in the year.
I'm sure there will be more social media coverage as and when...

Something of a mixed blessing there then :)

Yes, indeed - or maybe making the most of a bad job?
Closing loos for refit - stone and diggers and dumpers for new roads and paths - new power cables crossing main car-park - containers going in - roofing contractors etc - would have all been possible if we were open, but are being been completed much faster without having to work around visitors.

Visited Hamerton today, it was packed, almost like a bank holiday, I suspect some areas nearby are still on school holidays?!They went back today where I live.
'news' of note
Southern Aardwolf signage removed, but Eastern seen.
No sign of Squirrel gliders in sloth House.

Echidna now 'on show' in Old bat House along with cuscus, but neither seen!
Ring-tailed possum now where cuscus was, again not seen!
3 very small Ring-tailed lemur seen and a baby camel.
For the first time in a single visit I saw all 4 cassowary.

I visited today also, the lamp was still on in the southern aardwolf exhibit, so hopefully he’s ok:)

For information, schools in my county go back next Monday as we broke up the day before Good Friday.

Did you get any photos of the new developments? :)

New arrivals at Hamerton - Swinhoe’s Striped Squirrels: Log into Facebook | Facebook
Hamerton's website further summarises some of the main developments over the past few months and future plans as well:

"The spring has seen many new births with baby Collared and Ring-tail Lemurs, Red-handed and Red-bellied Tamarins, a Mini Donkey foal, Camel calf, Brown Wood and Burrowing Owls plus a Ruppell's Vulture. No fewer than ten Corsac Fox puppies have been born to our group, a litter of 6 on Mother's Day and 4 more just a week later. However, many birds are only starting their breeding routines now, as it has been such a late, cold spring. We eagerly await the arrival of a female North American Ring-tail from the USA, a mate for our young male, and several enclosures have been re-vamped for some of our smaller animals such as Fat Sand Rats, Gillen's Monitors, Harvest Mice and soon to arrive Swinhoe's Striped Squirrels, a new species for the park. Work continues on more path-ways to give a new route for the road-train, and our freshly re-vamped loos seem to be working well. Our main on-show Cheetah enclosure is being partly re-fenced, two additional aviaries added to the main central aviary block for Australian birds, and work will soon re-commence on the new Meerkat enclosure which we hope to have open by the summer; along with upgraded power supplies running from our wind-turbines to the Coffee-Shop and central area of the park."

Is it best to see all of the nocturnal species in the morning at 10:00 or the afternoon at 3:00? I need to know what time I’d like to visit so it would help lots:)
Thanks

There have been a couple of births mentioned on Facebook that haven't been mentioned here:

- On 2nd June the birth of a new Grant's zebra was announced, which had been born a couple of days earlier.

- On 11th June a new baby Linne's two-toed sloth was announced, having been born a week earlier.

From Facebook:
Caracals Down-U
We have just had our first major animal move for over a year and all is well. Five Caracals have made the journey from Hamerton to Australia over Friday/Saturday, and are now settling into their new temporary quarantine accommodation. They originate from several pure and unrelated blood-lines, and will provide a founding population for the breeding programme.
We are all very grateful to everyone in our team who helped make this move come together, Special thanks go to the staff of Emirates Airlines at London Heathrow, who were wonderful.
