Zoo that used to display giant pandas

Taronga has Mjukuu (2014) and Fabumi (2015), but Johari is on contraception to prevent unwanted attention from Kibale. The zoo are apparently content for her to remain non breeding for the sake of running a cohesive troop - especially after the death of Julia at Melbourne Zoo.

That's interesting news to know about Johari being contracepted, but I'd better not comment further about gorillas here for fear of hijacking a thread about Pandas!

Whipsnade zoo had Giant Pandas during the second world war after they moved from London zoo for safe keeping.

London Zoo imported five Giant pandas Dec 25, 1938. They were originally called Baby, Grumpy, Dopey, Happy and Grandma.

Grandma died Jan 9, 1939. Happy was sent to various European zoos and then on to the USA (where he died 1946).

London Zoo retained Baby, Grumpy and Dopey - but renamed them as Ming, Tang and Sung.

Sung died December 18, 1939; Tang died April 23, 1940; and Ming died December 26, 1944.

After Ming died, London exhibited another one- male(?) Lien Ho.

Followed by the famous ChiChi (female) and temporarily AnAn(male) on loan from Moscow Zoo.

Followed by the pair ChingChing(female) and ChiaChia(male).

Then finally Ming Ming(female) and was it BaoBao(male) from Berlin ...?

Ming Ming arrived in 1991 and left in 1994. She was the last Giant panda held at London Zoo. Bao Bao was briefly loaned for breeding, but this was unsuccessful. There was speculation that Ming Ming was infertile as she never bred in China. She was 14 upon import to London and bordering on post reproductive upon her return. She was the oldest panda in the world when she died aged 34 in 2011.

‘Grandma’ can be seen mounted in the Leeds Museum.

‘Happy’ died in St. Louis, USA, on 10th March 1946.

As far as i'm aware, all US zoos that had Pandas are:

Las Angeles

Europe:

Berlin
Beekse Bergen
London
Antwerpen
De Vincennes
Tierpark Berlin

If any of you have any more information about Pandas in US zoos do share since there isn't a American Zootierliste

Unfortunately, no. I have a postcard of a giant panda at Whipsnade but it is a close up of the animal and doesn't provide a view of the enclosure.

Busch Gardens Tampa Bay had pandas for a short time, 6 months to a year. From 1987-1988 they had a specially built enclosure for Ling Ling and Yong Yong. I remember seeing them on a special field trip from school. These are not my pictures, but here are some I found online:
Originals and more found here from Flikr user dkl1:

Are these the only Pandas ever Displayed in Florida?

Indeed. A sculpture of the two pandas located in the zoo’s entrance plaza reads:

These statues commemorate the historic visit of the giant pandas, Le Le and Nan Nan from from 5/24/88 to 10/25/88, and celebrate the friendship between the People’s Republic of China and the Toledo Zoo
.

IIRC, the zoo got the pandas because their at-the-time-brand-new Hippoquarium (TM) won an AZA exhibit of the year award or something like that. The zoo’s display of the bears was criticized by some conservationists because they saw the zoo as exploiting them for money.
Ya that was directly right after the time the Bronx Zoo had displayed a Giant Panda the previous year. No one made issue when Bronx had a Giant Panda on exhibit (and YES I went to see it), but heaven forbit when Toledo Zoo came into the scene displaying Giant Pandas to raise money they made super big stink of it. FAST FORWARD TODAY: look at everything zoo's are doing to raise cash for "conservation." An raising cash with ALL human tokens of entertainment and experiences over building better exhibits for their animals isn't thought of twice in the name of conservation. Good thing Toledo is in the history books for starting a trend so readily practiced today. You want it both ways there you go!
