Asian Elephants in Europe 2021

Recent news the bull Alexander WardaxMotek will be heading for the Zoo Lodz sometime this month along with Tom and even Fahim which in my opinion is the most shocking though I am be wrong. I am a bit confused by this I thought Fahim would stay at Rotterdam in order to mate with Timber's two daughter's Faya and Ni Linh. But one the bright side that fact that Alexander will be leaving Allwetter will mean that perhaps the zoo will be looking for a new breeding bull to mate with Corny and Ratna.

Fahim is probably not interested in cows because he grew up alone for a long time.

So far the zoo has always assumed that the lacking breeding success has the cause in the constellation among the cows. Older ones Tefi and Kanaudi stick together and don't get along with the cows from Hamburg, Corny and Ratna. Alexander has no interest in mating but since even an AI attempt failed it can be doubted that he is the reason.

Fahim has grown up in a good social group in Zurich and after that, lived in a bachelor group with another young bull. Almost all asian bulls with a similar social background do breed without any problems! And according to the Rotterdam Zoo, Fahim has actually mated with Faya and Trong Nhi, so there are no problems with his abilities as breeding bull. However, he might be too energetic for the facilities in Blijdorp. The bull paddock is very small and if I understand it correctly, the females are nervous if he is around them too long so that he cant share the big enclosure with them every day.

Regarding Munster, Ratna is way too old for a first pregnancy. And Corny got pregnant a few years ago in the same social group, so I very much doubt any social problems among the females are the reason why she hasnt had another calf. Social problems can be a reason why a female stopps cycling, but that AI was attempted shows that she actually has a cycle. Failure of one (or two or even three) AI attempts is no proof that something is wrong with the females! Many females need a year or two to get pregnant, but AI is so expensive and difficult to organize to do it more then a few times. I think Corny will have a good chance to get pregnant again if another bull who has sexual interest in her is brought in.

It is very strange that Alex lost interest in the females in Munster; he had been such a relieable breeding bull in the past and mated with all females in the group in serveral zoos (Rotterdam, Antwerp and Amersfoort). And he did mate with Corny in the passt. I hope he has no underlying health problems.

Both, Corny (2013) and Ratna (2014) were pregnant from Alexander in the past, and later on AI was attempted with Ratna in 2016, not with Corny as far as I know. The future will tell if it's going to be a success but the situation is not too different for both cows, Corny is 25 and Ratna is 29. After Rada died in late 2018 the zoo decided not to change the constellation. The reason for the lacking success was seen in the cows as Alexander is a proven breeder, he had been Münster's favorite choice when they switched bulls in 2011. There is a new zoo director now, maybe she has a different perspective and wants to give it a chance again

Yes at only 15 years old Fahim is far to energetic to stay at Rotterdam but the zoo could use the same tactic as they did with Timber by sending him to the Reserva El Castillo De Las Guardas from 2002 to 2007 then heading back to Blijdorp, the zoo can do the same for Fahim. And though I do not doubt Fahim's breeding ability he can learn the ropes from one of europe's best breeding bulls.

I also do agree that is strange for Alex to just stop breeding completely but maybe it isn't the cow's fault they couldn't get pregnant perhaps it had to due with Alex moving way to much as he had been moving through six zoo's since he was a calf of just two years old to the time a became the father of 15 calves at the age of 34 before stopping at Munster. A similar thing to Tembo the african elephant as he did mate with all of females at Dresden but none of them got pregnant the reason for this is that his semen was not active according to news reports the same thing could have happened with Alexander.

What bull are you talking about? At Reserva El Castillo De Las Guardas there is currently only one Asian elephant bull who has produced zero offspring and is still very young. Also Rotterdam did not send Timber to Reserva El Castillo De Las Guardas but Reserva El Castillo De Las Guardas sent Timber to Rotterdam.

Timber he stayed there until 2007

I think one of the reasons Fahim has to travel may be that Trong Nhi and her daughter can't be with other elephants and Rotterdam need more space.
There is something wrong with Ratna and Corny, but unfortunately we don't know what. It could be that Alexander is currently infertile, or they have a problem getting pregnant, or (because they both had their 1st calf quite late and dead) will no longer have a calf. I hope the last option is not true.

I wonder if they’ll bring him back considering Trong Nhi and her daughter will hopefully more than likely be leaving by the end of this year. I’ve also heard he has already bred with Trong and Faya(I believe that’s the other female name) so he may not be “needed” anymore anyways.

At the end of 2018 Rada died in Münster and back then there were discussions how to go on as the situation was far from perfect with the bull unwillng to mate anymore, and the four cows split into groups of two. Some were hoping that matrilinies would be put together again, Hamburg's Yashoda and Kandy with Corny and/or a smaller solution with Leipzig's Rani (now with young Kiran) and her sister Ratna. However, Münster quickly decided that they will not do any changes. Personally I think they were worried to become a senior's residence since it would be tough to find someone for the old cows, but if they had given the "young" ones away there would have been a big danger that EEP clears some space in other zoos and fills the slots in Münster. After all they renovated the elephant area only in 2011 and have a pretty neat and solid enclosure, which they built with the intention to breed.

The situation is interesting now as so far it seemed that Münster accepted this situation and kind of waited for old Tefi and Kanaudi (blind in the meantime) to die before re-grouping. I don't think there is too much need for the EEP to get Corny and/or Ratna to breed - one reason is the danger of piling up more young bulls, second is the question if you really need more Hamburg-based tiny matrilines with the genes you already have. In that sense it would really make more sense to merge matrilines, which were split in the past and have younger ones breed. Still it also can't be excluded that Münster wants to give it a final short with their cows...

Oh my bad I meant Port Lympne

Nina at Le Pal has given birth to a healthy calf!

And it is...a boy:(

A darn shame, so many bull calves the past few years. At least this little one is reasonably genetically valuable, and has the potential to be an impressive looking animal down the road. Fingers crossed the next one is a girl.

I completely agree. His main mission was breeding with Faya. It's great that she's trying to have calf with Trong Nhi even if they want to move her elsewhere. After all, she had a single calf in 2013 and it is a long time.
