Veszprem Zoo News from Veszprem

A White rhino baby and a Gelada was born in February:)
Gelada is a very welcome birth!

For the record: the white rhino calf was born to cow Rebecca and the first successful birth by natural reproduction in Hungary (Budapest past births were all AI, Sosto had a stillborn calf in 2015 and nothing since, do not know why ...).

White rhino swapping between Veszprém and Sóstó, on 17 May 2021, Makoubu (27) was transferred to Sósto, next day, on 18 May 2021, Jala (12) from Sóstó arrived at Veszprém.
It should be noted that Veszprém's current bull Rafiki is a proven breeder with the birth of female Ria to mother Rebecca in 2020. Sometimes a change of bulls will do the trick, allthough it has taken 6 years before bull Rafiki beat the competition in older bull Pablo (who remains there too).

Efforts to get the rhinos in Sosto to breed have met with no success till date beyond a stillborn calf in 2015. In this case bulls were changed in 2012 with Athos leaving for Salzburg and male Curt arriving from Kobenhavn. None of the cows Makoubu, Jala and Naruna (12) - the latter 2 at Sosto - have had calves till now either.

Veszprém Zoo want to build new enclosures for their Tigers, Carpathian lynxes and Snow leopards. As far as I know there are no exact plans yet.

The zoo opened the new complex of cat enclosures (Amur tigers, snow leopards and Carpathian lynxes) to visitors at the end of May.

A little bit too open and lacks more climbing oportunities but otherwise looks neat I would say.
