Indianapolis Zoo Indianapolis Zoo News

Alligators & Crocodiles: The Fight to Survive is a brand-new exhibit at the zoo, with two species (American Alligator and Orinoco Crocodile) on display near the entrance to the Plains section of the zoo. There will be daily opportunities for the public to 'pet' baby gators:

Here is a video link previewing the new exhibit:

I know it's an upcoming project that has been casually mentioned, but no other information is publicly available afaik. Where would they put such a center? The zoo has very little unutilized space, so it would have to replace some large exhibit complex.
No idea but construction contractors are being sought so apparently plans are well advanced.

Indianapolis Zoo has apparently had chimpanzees on site (behind the scenes) for quite a while now. I've known about them for probably a year and it's exciting to think that the zoo will definitely be announcing news later in 2021 in regards to a new exhibit for a second great ape species. (They need to keep promoting the gators and crocs first) I honestly don't know any other significant details, but adding chimps is a major statement and we'll all be waiting in anticipation of what the enclosure looks like. :p

Please don't be a megachurch, please don't be a megachurch, please don't be a megachurch...

In all seriousness, there is a preview of the alligator exhibit on Google Maps in the Photos section, and so far it looks decent, with a good amount of land space and a decent sized, but slightly underwhelming pool. Hopefully we'll see the chimps in a more naturalistic habitat as well.

That sounds exciting!

Wasn't there a proposal to relocate the zoos parking lot and use the existing one as an expansion of the main zoo? I remember hearing about that somewhere on here but I am unsure when that was. Any idea of what the status of that endeavor is?

The only area for replacement besides an animal exhibit would be that roller coaster behind the orangutans. I would be glad to see that go in favor of the chimp center, though I am doubtful that will happen.

I found the photo and I agree it looks nice. Was kinda hoping that their would be some sort of hut viewing though.

Maybe it would replace MISTery Park? That part of the zoo is kind of pointless and this would put the chimps right next to Orangs. If this was to be done though, it would probably also replace the dog show stage and one of the restaurants (the only restaurant?).

Their is Nana's Kitchen, Cafe on the Commons, and the Westside Cafe so their are multiple restaurants.

I might visit this Sunday, so I'll take some photos of the new exhibit. Also the zoo welcomed a new Bald Eagle named Lincoln, and a Golden Eagle named Stewart who both came from the Great Plains Zoo and now are exhibited together.
