Indianapolis Zoo Indianapolis Zoo News

Funny, I was about to post in the exhibitry themes/styles thread that I want to see more unnatural looking exhibits!

I love almost everything about the Orangutan Center. It has a commanding presence being visible from almost anywhere in the zoo. It’s architecture is unlike anything I’ve seen in any other institution. And I think it’s function over form style lends itself to unique experiences. I’ve never seen an orangutan, let alone any primate, swing across a gap as wide the entire day room. Not to mention the engineering alone would be worth the visit sans orangutans.

To see them do a spin off with chimps is very exciting! I don’t necessarily love the main climbing structure, but I do enjoy them going grandiose with the height. The overhead pathways should create some unique experiences and push the envelope when it comes to chimp exhibits. I’m curious to see the areas these paths connect to, as the outdoor portions of the Orangutan Center do leave a lot to be desired.

You know, I was about to post that Indianapolis had been weirdly quiet about their future plans. Usually we get at least one short press release in the fall.

I’m actually quite excited for the ambassador center. The zoo has a few really cool ones that can’t consistently be seen (aardvark, sloths chief among them).

I feel like no one has properly discussed that they plan on having 30+ chimpanzees. I don’t know if that’s the most of any American zoo, but it’s the most I’ve ever seen at one. Incorporating the overhead pathways common for gorillas is interesting. I wonder if they’ll actually have unrestricted access to all of the enclosures or if they’ll rotate them through like the orangs.

A little disappointing that there isn’t anything for the lions or dolphins. Both exhibits are a bit behind the times for the species, especially since the lions have to be separated by sex for the moment. Maybe they’re just waiting for the baboons to die off for that?

Also no word on the walrus exhibit renovations. A little odd since they like to have something to debut every year and that seems like the most likely candidate to be ready for 2023.

His brother/littermate, Roman, passed away from the same condition a few months ago and their remaining littermate, sister Helina, has also been diagnosed with this and is undergoing treatment
Could that be something that's being passed down from that line? I don't wanna say to disqualify the parents but maybe look into it

The zoo confirmed on Facebook that the former walrus exhibit is now the grey seal exhibit. A new space for the walruses is under renovation, and should be open by Spring 2023. The walruses will remain behind the scenes until then.

Curious to see where the new Walrus exhibit will be. I know there is renovations/construction going on currently in several areas around the zoo.
Just curious, are there any art designs for the new walrus habitat? Or no?

Indy is very, very shy with details on upcoming exhibits. We only had a single paragraph about the kangaroo exhibit until the media previews right before it opened. Given that this isn’t even something they’ve announced publicly as far as I can tell, no. We have no idea what, if anything, they’re doing in the public facing area.
