I will post a mini review in this thread soon.

Thanks for posting the species list! I really want to check this place out but man it's so far north.
Yeah this place's bird collection (especially waterfowl) is insane. I freaked out when I saw the prairie-chickens because I was so shocked they had them. People probably thought I was crazy (and maybe they were right).

Minor correction: I got a bit mixed up with the aviaries in Section 4. Elliot's Pheasant and White-faced Whistling-Duck (not already listed, forgot about it) are in their own aviary between exhibit 12 and 13, not in either of those aviaries.

Here's my short review, it turned out a bit less mini then I had intended:

Wildwood Wildlife Park is a privately-owned zoo located in Minocqua, WI. Before I visited, I had seen that on their website they claimed to be Wisconsin's second-largest zoo. I had figured this claim was bogus, obviously Wisconsin's second largest zoo cannot be located in an out-of-the-way town with a population of 450! I was surprised to see that, by species count, this claim is correct.

The zoo is clearly divided into 4 sections, along with a safari ride. Each of these sections feel very different, almost like completely different zoos. Interestingly, the first section can be seen without paying admission. This is by far the smallest section, and mostly contains fish and waterfowl.

The second section is bad. Not a great first impression for someone visiting zoos for the first time. With the exception of the exhibits for Kinkajou, tortoises, cranes, and spiny mice, and Eclectus Parrots, all of the exhibits in this section are terrible. A skunk with no hides and just enough room to turn around. An Asian Emerald Dove that can't move its wings. The most crowded little rabbit enclosure ever. A Moluccan Cockatoo with just a perch. This section is extremely depressing, but luckily it's small.

The third section is where everything start to pick up. This is by far the largest section of the zoo, both in terms of size and species count. About two-thirds of the enclosures here are great, iehter perfectly adequate or even excellent. The remaining third are about as bad as Section Two, though. Badgers with no digging space. Beaver with no diving room. Five flying squirrels crowded into a four-foot cage. A wolf in a corncrib. There was lots of construction going on in this section, and I assume much of it is attempts to update these enclosures. Many of the terrible enclosures that used to be here (that you can see in the gallery) are gone, and the species have either been given better enclosures or left the zoo. This even includes some popular animals, like bears. Overall, this section is a mixed bag, but there's lots of great stuff here.

Section Four is the highlight of the zoo. This section is all brand-new, and nearly all of the enclosures here are good. I particularly enjoyed the primate enclosures, which made use of large, wooden climbing frames. The penguin exhibit was a bit on the small side but the pool was quite deep. All of the aviaries in this section are perfectly fine, too. They reminded me of the Pheasantry at Toledo.

Overall, I really enjoyed Wildwood Wildlife Park. Yeah, there's plenty of awful stuff here, but less than at most privately-owned zoos in Wisconsin, and the zoo is obviously trying their hardest to modernize. Their bird collection is highly impressive, especially where waterfowl are concerned. Overall, I highly recommend a visit, if you are up for going a bit out of your way (that's really the only way to get here, no matter where you're coming from).

Thank you for this posting. I would have never guessed that a private zoo that far north would have such an amazing bird collection! It makes me want to check it out!
