West Midland Safari and Leisure Park West Midland Safari Park 2021

'Mavis'- 11th of August 2003
'Helen'- 17th of July 2004
'Hilary'- 10th of October 2005

Much appreciated, I found the 2008 studbook online and I'm assuming they thought they were males when they were named? Given those dates they correspond to Hugo for Mavis, Howard for Helen and there is no birth recorded on 10th October 2005, two animals were born in this year 'George' born 2nd August 2005 and 'Geoffrey' born 10th September 2005. I'm leaning towards this potentially being an incomplete studbook as it also lists Longleats animals as Spot and 'Big Female'.

According to their facebook the mother is called Ailsa.

Yes, it’s Ailsa. She was born at Blair Drummond Safari Park in 2009 to Dorothy and Graham, and came to West Midland Safari Park in 2012. Since being there, she has given birth to three calves including her current male, and two older males named Ekozu and Granville :)

I have copies of the European Hippopotamus Studbook for the years 2007 - 2013 inclusive.

Regarding the hippos "Hugo", "Howard", "George" and "Geoffrey": all four are listed as males in the studbook for 2007 but are listed as females in the 2008 studbook and subsequent editions.

The studbook for 2012 lists "George" as having died on 1st January 2011.

Regarding your comment about the hippos at Longleat:

The Longleat animals are listed as "Spot" and "Big Female" in the studbooks between 2007 and 2011. In the 2012 and 2013 studbooks they are listed as "Spot" and "Sonia".

Thank you, just out of interest does the latest studbook list 'Friday' or 'Harriet' as the mother of 'Mavis'/'Hugo' born 11/08/2003? The 2007 issue lists Friday but I found at least two articles online stating that Harriet gave birth on that date.

All the editions of the studbook that I have, give "Friday" as the mother of "Hugo".

Hey guys

I just wondered on how the elephants and cheetahs are doing so far in their brand new home since the photos

Planning applications for phase 2 are now up. As I stated earlier this year Phase 2 consists of 8 lodges, 4 each overlooking the new 24 hour paddocks for giraffes and rhinos. The masterplan has changed slightly due to costs and visual impacts....
21/0621/FUL | Construction of eight safari lodges, demolition of the existing rhino, ungulate and giraffe housing and erection of new giraffe house, mixed species house (rhino/ungulates) and associated paddocks. | West Midlands Safari Park Kidderminster Road Bewdley Worcestershire DY12 1LF

Quick summary from the documents found and staff notices:
  • Ungulate building has now merged with the rhino house to reduce land used and reduce visual impact. Regardless its roughly the same size as the elephant house. The current ungulates on site that will use the facility are : 8 Rhinos ,4 Ankole cows, 4 Grevy’s zebras, 4 Plains zebras, 4 Congo buffalos and 2 Waterbuck. Other species like eland and lewche use the already built facility next the entrance. I was told they are planning on importing more animals however the old ungulate building is nearing its expiry date juts like rhinos and hippo house, so they are waiting for better facilities. The plan is too divide the plains in half. Rhinos will also apparently have 24 hour access on reserve and lodges.
  • The new Giraffe house will now be viewable for guests on the 2nd floor. The building layout has not changed since 1st plan. Their current small island will be expanded into a small drive through connecting to the new house. Again its states 24 hour access to the reserve.
  • Red pandas are set to open 2nd of August.
  • The Asian passage in front of elephants is remaining. Now the plains is divided there's no need for a new section. The divide is due to traffic , aggression in feeding, easier to manage and safer for new calves.
  • Existing giraffe, rhino and ungulate housing demolished in 2 years
  • Cheetah and elephant lodges are fully booked for 18 months
  • Path too the explorer zone is also being built to allow guests to walk to lodges
  • Hippos confirmed to be mixed when new housing is built and will be breeding herd again
  • I was told next phases are still being altered as white lions are apparently also being phased out now and Bactrian camels are staying in the valley

African elephant Latabe has passed away aged 28yrs. According to Facebook

" initial findings indicate a cardiac issue although a full post mortem will be carried out".
Thoughts are with her keepers at this sad time

Horrible - how many elephants are they left with now?

Didn't they say they were getting more as part of the Elephant Lodges project?

@bintarong can you answer @Nathano's post?

Yes ,they plan to become a breeding herd of 3 females and a male. Male is being imported from males already out on loan. Sutton will leave in a few years. A bit hard to find suitable females due to brexit and covid. They'll be a major push to get this sorted now for welfare standards.
