North Carolina Zoo North Carolina Zoo News 2021

I believe they actually have more than that. Only three bred this year so far though. Whats most interesting is that the pair on exhibit bred. If its the same pair that had been their the past few years it was a young male and rather old female. I was told they were not likely to breed. So this is interesting.
It is interesting to learn that the zoo now holds 36 (!!!) red wolves with a wild population at 10-20 wolves in eastern NC. The other zoo with an even larger group is Tacoma Point Defiance.

I noticed the scarlet ibises were missing from the aviary today. Spoke with a keeper who said that the zoo's group had aged out and the remaining ibis was sent to a zoo in Texas. They have acquired three Madagascan Ibises (also known as white-winged ibises) from Germany to replace them. According to the keeper, the NC zoo is the only zoo in the country with this new species.

Thats a positive move. I mean scarlet ibis are real common. They were down to 2 or so anyways last I saw. Madagascar ibis are far less common but not rare. I mean I saw them just this week at both the Fort Worth and Dallas Zoo. As well the Bronx Zoo is now breeding them. I am unsure if their is an official program but some of the nation’s leading zoos definitely want to grow this species’ population.

I honestly thought they couldn't hold 3 bulls. Any news if Artie has been sent away? Considering C'Sar is partly blind and is never leaving the zoo.

I wonder if Omaha will be bringing in an experienced bull asap.

Edit: All three bulls are still there.

Omaha has Callee, an experienced bull, who has already gotten Claire, one of the Swaziland females, pregnant. Louie didn't seem to take interest in the females Omaha has so it's not surprising they moved him.

Oh I forgot. Good news. Considering how breeding from the import has been kind of a waste up until this point. I was recently at Dallas at its kind of embarrassing that they don't have a breeding bull after this many years.

Louie was originally supposed to move in Spring 2020, pandemic delayed it. The good thing is that gave him much more time to watch and learn from Callee, particularly on the breeding-front. Fingers crossed that Louie and 19 y/o Batir hit it off and the get-go!!!

nczoofan... re: Dallas -- Surely Tendaji is now capable of copulating with Mlilo and Zola at his age and size.

He’s still mixed with his mother and it will be Years before I believe he will be able to become a breeding bull. Maybe theirs a small chance he could breed with the females but I doubt it and wouldn’t bet on a 7 year old elephant.
