Paignton Zoo Paignton Zoo 2021

....also, the Bug House & Amphibian Ark areas are looking even better with really good mixed species exhibits. I really like (and something I’ve been calling for) the signage on the reptile & amphib empty tanks/vivs which gives specific information about which species are arriving and why it is empty. We need the mammal dept to follow suit!
The tropical house had a small pair of parrots (Lory or Caique?) - see pic. I saw Bali Starlings, Fruit Doves, Nicobar Pigeons, Orange L Thrushes & Alexandrine (?) Parakeets - there was no updated signage, but it felt weird with so few birds.
I believe the parrots are a species of Pyrrhura, most likely Pearly Parakeets.

Thanks for this info.
Further reflections on yesterday’s visit: I also noticed, that I didn’t see any Tinamou in the Desert house, blue fish (cichlid?) in the croc house (or very few) or Swamp Wallaby (again, could be hiding).
The snapping turtle were in the penultimate crocodile pond and were very active, as was the small Cuban croc in the Lilly pond.
Not sure if a new monkey species will replace the Cottontop Tamarins? Also didn’t see any coati for the fourth visit in a row.
The Gardens team have done a wonderful job around the zoo - it’s looking lovely given the current context of everything.
Noticed the small house in the ex pudu area (that was at one time going to house Duiker) is still empty, as is the Cusimanse area.

@TriUK I saw two Swamp Wallabies last week and also Coati (I think it was last week - my visits this month have blurred into an amorphous series of rain, not a lot to see and early departures). I saw some blue fish in the first Cuban croc pool.

A good move for the Cottontop Tamarins as they were invisible on their island. A bit like the Pygmy Slow Loris - I rarely bother to peer into their enclosure now and have observed many visitors just walking past as though it wasn't an exhibit. Probably not a good idea to get too close to the cut-outs in the screen anyway in the current circumstances!

Amphib Ark : I've said this elsewhere regarding the signage - it would be so helpful if the frogs were shown actual size on the tank labels. Although we know most are very small, the average visitor probably doesn't.

Yes, the gardens look beautiful! We missed the flowering of the Foxglove Trees (Paulownia Tomentosa) last year because of lockdown and this year the buds are being blown off by the weather, but look out for at least three - one near the cheetahs and two near the rhinos.

Thanks @Gigit , good news re. wallabies & coati.
I also didn’t see any Green Peafowl or Magpie Geese?

I suggest that birds in the photo posted by @TriUK may be grey-breasted conures (Pyrrhura griseipectus). Zootierliste says that Paignton has had the species for a few years, although they haven't been on display before, as far as I know. I doubt whether the other parakeets could be Alexandrines, which would be liable to damage too many plants - although I would love to see them in one of the proper parrot aviaries: they might be the plumheads which were formerly in Reptile Tropics, although they hardly ever ventured out of the corner section behind the Guiana dragons.
I saw 3 tinamous in the Desert House on Monday. The blue cichlids in the Croc Swamp are male cobalt zebras (Maylandia callainos) or hybrids with cobalts in their ancestry, the females seem to be mainly OB morphs (because they are Orange with dark Blotches), their numbers may have gone down a little - which may be linked to the growth of the smaller Tomistoma or the stealth of the alligator snappers, but they can reproduce rapidly.

The Ape House was open this morning - the three orangs taking it easy on one side and Pertinax likewise on the other. The orangutan ID sign showing 6 orangs is still up - especially poignant in view of Gambira's death and a reminder of Mali and Tatty. Outside, the strimmers did reach the blackberry bushes which used to keep the orangs busy for hours.

The CWP lionesses are said to be due this week.

I shouldn't do things in a rush - the orangutan ID sign does, of course, show 5 orangs as male, Wousan, has not been included ( Chinta, Natalia, Mali, Tatty and Gambira).

Good news. A coincidence they all begin with ‘A’, or a breeding programme trend?

@TriUK this is not the first time animals of the same species at Paignton, have had similar names. Some of you may remember that the original pair of Red Pandas were called Mandy and Randy. In fact as far as I know Randy is still alive and well. Can a fellow Zoochatter please correct me if I am wrong?

@Gigit USER=107]@Pertinax[/USER] or @TriUK will any of you be at Paignton Zoo today 15th June? I ask this as I will be visiting from my Care Home. I will be there with a couple of carers and fellow resident who I am friends with.

If you are present I would like to meet you so I can put a name to your photo a Zoochat name. I presume your not called @Gigit @Pertinax or @TriUK in real life.

Unfortunately I won’t, I’ll be at work as I’m a teacher. Have a wonderful day & enjoy the park. Take care.

Sorry, I'm involved in a big family event. Hope you see Pertinax the gorilla.

@Gigit I love Pertinax his friends and the Orangutans!! The smell in the Ape House is lush!!! @Gigit is the Giraffe House open yet? It will be my first visit to Paignton Zoo since Duchess passed away, I am going to look at her desolate enclosure and reminisce on how amazing she was. It will no doubt be emotional for me.
