North American Asian Elephant Reproduction

@Sarus Crane I think that Phoebes calf has excellent potential to be a stunning bull!

Hank is MASSIVE, with very impressive, albeit not very symmetrical tusks. Phoebe and her line tend to be very tall, leggy animals, with symmetrical, fast growing tusks.

Overall, I think we can expect a bull that will be tall and leggy and of a medium to thicker build, with REALLY nice tusks, especially once he hits 20+ years old.

So a build like his Dad Coco? Wasn't he over 10 ft? I found out recently from one of his former keepers that Bud of Grant's Farm (African bull) was 10'9" and 18,000 lbs. It'd be great to start breeding Asian to start looking like mammoths using certain lines with specific features!

Huh?

Coco is the sire to Bodhi and Beco. Bodhi is basically a skinny Coco, and Beco is a mix of his two parents.

Bodhi is the sire to Winnie. Considering Bodhi is tall and skinny, and Tupelo is short and squat, its anyones guess who Winnie will take after (although its likely it will be Tupelo, the genes of Tupelos line seem to be fairly dominant).

The newest calf at Columbus, out of Hank and Phoebe, shares no relation with Coco.

Does anyone have any photos of Vance? I've heard so much about him yet I haven't seen any photos of him that I can remember. Apparently at 58 years old, he sired many bulls who are still around today and even Luke (castrated) who resides at Two Tails Ranch. How large is he and since he's at Ringling I'm guessing he'll be travelling to White Oak with the other bulls and cows who are coming later?

I don’t think the public has seen him. I doubt he could be moved since he has or had TB. And Ringling is secretive.

Charlie used to travel on the blue circuit. He and the Woodcock daughter had their own skit. Maybe you can find it on YouTube.

Here's the only photo I've been able to find of Vance in his prime. He would've been 24 years old in this picture. The calf in front is one of his sons.

Wrong Vance in this photo, that's the one that went to Bowmanville. He is about 16 years old there. Ringling's Vance looks much different. Correct about the calf though.
The calf is Caesar (Vance x Minyax) who was born in 1987 and died in the year 2006

What ever Rockton is doing they are doing it well perhaps others could learn from them. It seems a shame herds like San Deigos Wild animal park (Now Safari park) and the UKs Port Lypmne never really has much success with the Asian species.

A bit off topic but does anyone know if Rose-tu at Oregon is pregnant? I really hope she has a calf soon because it's been around 8 and a half years since she had her last calf. Also @Hyak_II do you think there is any chance that Chendra may concieve again?
If Rose-Tu is pregnant, it is not publicly known knowledge. As for Chendra, it would be in the zoos best interest not to breed her as she is a Bornean elephant and therefor her offspring with Sri Lankan and Indian elephants would by hybrids.

It would be best to have all overseas purebred Borneans at 1-2 facilities in Europe or SE Asian mainland zoo.

I hate to be a downer, but reality-wise, I'm not getting my hopes up. I remember December 2018. It could die of EEHV sooner or later. It's great that the calf was born healthy, but as we've seen before things can go downhill so fast. I hope it will survive though! Best of luck to the keepers and care staff at Columbus.

actually I don’t think the calf born at Columbus zoo in December 2018 died of EEHV. I think it was from a bacterial infection or something like that
