Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo & Aquarium News 2021

The zoo has added two Harbor Seals to the Sea Lion Shores exhibit.

Omaha zoo welcomes harbor seals Monty and Milo to sea lion exhibit

Monty is from the Blank Park Zoo and Milo is from the Milwaukee County Zoo.

Another item to note, the Malayan Tapir and Francois Langur exhibit has reopened. The third tapir remains in the African island exhibit, and the sign for the Malayan tapir in the South American island exhibit has been removed. Hopefully this is pointing to a new species coming back to that exhibit with the black howler monkeys. Wishful thinking would be another Baird's tapir or possibly a capybara would be nice. But who knows at this point.

Kimberley Rock Monitors (Varanus glauerti) have hatched for the first time at Omaha:
For the first time at our Zoo, three Kimberley rock monitors have hatched in the Desert Dome. The babies hatched Sunday, March 28 – Monday, March 29 after a 99 – 100-day incubation period. When they’re good and ready (we'll let you know exactly when that is), they will move into a habitat in the Desert Dome’s Sunroom, where they can be viewed by the public. In the mean time, though.. Visitors can see their parents in the Australian region of the Desert Dome. Fun fact: Kimberley rock monitors are endemic to the Kimberley region of northwestern Australia. Their long, slender bodies are ideal for squeezing into the rock crevices of vertical habitats, such as rocky cliff faces. Our Zoo is one of at least three within the Association of Zoos and Aquariums community to work with the species.

Got a new photo of the exterior work on Gorilla Valley yesterday. Excited to see the finished product in July.

From a post on the Omaha Zoo Foundation's website:

"By the end of June, the Simmons Aviary will re-open with a new entrance, new boardwalk, new flamingo viewing and a ground-level trail. Hubbard Gorilla Valley will include more natural enhancements for its primate inhabitants, including a major climbing structure, as well as a new wall of monitors with videos the Zoo has produced detailing the lives and times of our own gorillas, as well as our partnerships with various global gorilla conservation efforts, such as the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund."

The odd movement of tapirs back and forth from the South America island to the Africa island and back to South America in the Lied Jungle continues. The sign for the malayan tapir also returned to the South American island so I'm done guessing what the plan is here. The black howler monkeys were moved to the African island exhibit where the Diana and Debrazza's monkeys were. However, I have not seen either of these two monkey species for a long while now.

More information on Louie's move to the NC Zoo.

"Louie the elephant recently made a 1,200-plus-mile trip from Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo & Aquarium to his new home at the North Carolina Zoo.

The 18-year-old African bull elephant’s departure was announced Thursday and comes a few months after the Omaha zoo’s announcement that African elephant Claire is expected to give birth early next year.

Claire is pregnant by Callee, who came to Omaha about two years ago from the Birmingham Zoo in Alabama in hopes that he would breed with the Omaha zoo’s five female elephants.

Also, the omaha zoo & aquarium is getting new flamingos for the newly renovated aviary, are they bringing in any other new birds/species?

I believe their flamingo flock is being held off exhibit. On 6/3 I spotted one at a distance being held off exhibit behind the pink backed pelicans in the African Grasslands.

Can someone politely tell me when and if the omahs zoo & aquarium is getting Bairds tapirs for the lied jungle? Also what happened to the quince/yellow monitor, seluwesi crested macaques, and the desert domes rock wallabies.

Thanks

Lenny

If you're in Omaha, it may be quicker to ask a staff member next time you visit.

The rock-wallabies were phased-out, likely due to their awfully small enclosure and the fact that the population in the US is both small and dwindling so it's best to consolidate animals at breeding facilities.

Well @PSO, I do know that ZooTampa at Lowry Park might have phased out the wallabies around a year or two ago. Los Angeles might still have them out on display, but other than Los Angeles. I am not certain on the other facilities that still house the species as of this year (2021).
