Asian Elephants in Europe 2021

Some of the most horrible news that I have heard the UK is now passing law's banning keeping elephant's in zoo's and this is due dumb*** animal rights group's and not only do they want to ban the keeping of elephant's in the UK they also want to ban all zoo's in europe from having elephants.
If this is true, this is some of the worst news ever. Is there a link that you got this information from?

Four reproductive females, .... which ones?
Tier park Berlin females?
Kewa, Pantha, and Thuza from Berlin and Rani.
Kiran is ‚only‘ the 4th calf to die in Leipzig. And the high death rate is essily explained, the first 3 calves were born by Hoa who turned out to be aggressive against her offspring. She killed the first, fatally injured the second and while the third was rescued by the keepers, handraising failed (that is sadly the norm for elephants). Kirans sudden death looks an awful lot like EEHV... he was a tad young for EEHV but its still the most likely scenario.
I would include Thura's miscarriage of twins in 2016 and her abortion in 2018 to calves lost. They may not have made it full term but they were losses nonetheless.

I think you miss read the article as is says the UK is passing a law that would stop the importation of elephants into the country. It sounds like the zoos will still be able to import and export elephants to and from other zoos in the UK just not from other countries.

How would that work?! What if the elephants become limited genetically?
I think it would make better sense not to import elephants captured from the wild.

I'm not sure if people here are aware but the only papers that have published this information are the Daily Mail and The Sun which are UK newspapers widely known for circling misinformation. Yes, it is worrying that this is being claimed at all however I wouldn't trust it so blindly.

It looks like from another thread on here this article is debunked. It is business as usual. Thank goodness.

A female calf was born at the Izmir Wildlife Park on June 20 to Winner and Begümcan. This is their third calf together. While Turkey is technically an Asian country, the Izmir Wildlife Park is an EAZA member and is included in the breeding program. This is the first female calf in 2021, the first six were males.

the Motek x Warda line continues in another country. :)

I thought all of their calves were females?

Begümcan was sent to Turkey from India as a gift, so it’s safe to conclude that’s she is an Indian elephant. Is winner also an Indian elephant ir another subspecies?

So does this mean they are going to have an active breeding herd again? If I remember right some of their cows are hybrid and a couple are from Malaysia.

I am probably wrong about the origins of the two cows.
I’m pretty sure Manari is a Bornean elephant and her daughters and grand-daughters are all hybrid elephants. All Bornean and hybrid elephants are on phase-out in Europe. Hannover’s only other cow is a post-repro animal so I’m unsure what they’re breeding plans are...

thanks. They are making a huge effort so they must be planning something. The projected facility looks nice.

Most likely they will split the Hng hng group at Pairi Daiza. Probably Farina and her daughters will come to Hannover.

Manari is indeed a Bornean Elephant.

It would make a great project to set up an overseas Bornean elephant herd (with the few far and wide representatives of the Bornean island subspecies), an advertisement for ex situ management/conservation breeding and in support of the in situ conservation work.

Well I recently saw a photo of Sandry (Hussin x Cluady) and she was looking very round on the sides
