Cheetahs Cubs Get Ready for Debut at Japan Zoo --NTDTV.org
5 Feb 2013

In Tama Zoo located in Tokyo, five adorable cheetah cubs are getting ready for their public debut.

The cheetah cubs were born just last month.

They have the same parents but two cubs were born with distinctive stripes marking them as “King Cheetahs.”

[Kanji Nomoto, Animal Caretaker]
“ On January 6th this year, five cheetah cubs including two King Cheetah cubs were born at this zoo. Having two King Cheetah cubs is quite rare. The reason they are rare is that their fur patterns are actually stripes.”

The Cheetah King gene is recessive, making them rare in the wild and in captivity.

[Kanji Nomoto, Animal Caretaker]
“They are very rare. To explain how rare they are, there are only a few dozen in the wild and in captivity. In Japan they only exist here at Tama Zoo. They’re so rare that if you want to see them in Japan you have to come here."

Even though the mother of the cubs is originally from South Africa this is not the first time King Cheetah cubs were born at the Tama Zoo.

With the current five newborn cubs, Tama Zoo now has a total of 22 cheetahs.

King cheetahs are my favorite animal, so to me this is great! Also interesting in the video to see one of the adults perched on that thin tree limb - very catlike, but very un-cheetahlike.

two Tasmanian devils have arrived at Tama Zoo, which I found out from this thread - http://www.zoochat.com/241/visit-tokyo-447867/ - where FrancoisLangur said "By the way - Tama Zoo will start exhibition of Tasmanian devils TODAY (11th June)! Tama Zoo is the only zoo with Tasmanian devils in the Asian region, so I think it should be well worth seeing."

Nothing yet on the internet I can see (there probably is on some Japanese-language sites though), but I got a snippet from Twitter saying their names are Maydena and Murdunna which I like because they sound like "Mayhem" and "Murder" :D

The devils are 2 females from Trowunna Wildlife Park.

here's a poorly-translated article (Japanese translated by Google):

Public beginning of the Tasmanian Devil in Tama animal park

This week will see the arrival of Amur tiger-male Artjom ( 1 1/2 years old ) from Tierpark Berlin. He is suspost to become the new breeding-male for the 2 females already at Tama.

Some of you may have missed this news but at long last a high profile animal move has taken place. F Indian rhino Gopon was transferred from Yokohama Kanazawa Zoo to Tokyo Tama Zoo.

This is part of the new set of breeding loans being done in Japanese zoos and to set up new pairings. F Gopon is a proven breeder.

I do hope they swap over the Nepal F Tokyo Tama own to either Nagoya Higashiyama or Yokohama Kanazawa as she never bred with the Nepal M they have at Tokyo Tama. Ideally, this move should have happened already 2-3 years ago, but F Gopon had just calved by then.

Not previously reported here. another large animal move involving the Indian rhinos scheduled for the month of March 2020: F Narayani (est. b. 2001 Nepal) is to move to Yokohama Kanazawa in the hope she may be bred with proven male Kintaro here.

One should realise the window for F Narayani to breed may be close(ing). It seems the already signalled at intensification of breeding programs and more ambitious animal exchange schemes are finally starting to happen in JAZGA accredited zoos. Fingers crossed for a good outcome.
